advice on buying a nissan mistral 2.7 diesel

Postby philip121 » Sat Sep 02, 2017 10:28 pm

I like the look of these .had an old terreno years ago...the trans packed up.....are the mistrals any better. is the speedo digital or manual ....what years are best....I don't want a digital speedo or end up with a stuffed trans like the old terreno. :D

Few things to look out for....
Image

Their are very few aftermarket parts for them.

Rust in the floor between double skin behind middle row of seats

Steering is very weak in the grand scheme of things....do a 2wd navara steering mod

The 98 SLE blacktop intercooled TD27E.t.I engine is quite powerful..in standard form actually produces more then a td42-t however the downside to this is the electronically controlled pump with it's timing advance and fly by wire needle lift control makes for quite a complicated system that is not with out issues. Mainly the wear on the magnetic lift valve which can get costly. Easiest fix is swap in a qd32 injector mechanical pump.
They also have a Garrett turbo charger which is very good an capable of 18-25 psi compared to the earlier mistral.

Front suspension is another Achilles heal.
Very poor setup from factory compared to
other I.f.s trucks but can be made strong.

Lastly if when on inspection the transmission fluid is neither clear or red(depending on brand of trans fluid) walk away. Apart from that they are otherwise pretty good little wagons with factory h233b rear LSD, can fit LSD to the front, room.for twin batteries, can fit 32's with out too much issue and disconnect on the sway bars will have it walking through most obstacles when crossed up.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

they do not have a digital speedo. The non intercooled versions are a bit gutless. Fine on the flat, and if you don't tow too much. Much cheaper to recondition the injector pump though, compared to the ETi version.
Those trans that fail usually suffer heat damage, (driving in soft sand heats them up fast, for example) so fiiting a trans cooler is a good bet. If you never intend to fit mud tyres, then the front suspension and steering will be fine for what you want to do. The mistral is no weaker than a terrano. Virtually identical underneath. There are plenty around that haven't been thrashed off road. So pick a well maintained one.
What is your intended use?

It would be used on road. not off. I like the look of the mistral .I dont need a speed wagon
What are they like regards diesel use....is replacing the fuel pump .on the later EFI models with qd32 type pump a job any good garage cauld do. what year was the EFI built. Also whats this rust in the roof on some
