NZ1 winch challenge.

Postby Checkerhead » Sun Oct 19, 2014 7:40 pm

Here is some of the plan for the NZ1 winch challenge. Lots of stuff still to be finalised, so don't take any of this as gospel.

The plan for NZ1 is to have the trucks in town doing some basic stages for the public on Friday night. I don't know much about what's planned here.

Saturday we are out to a new property. (Some pics and info below) This will be run in a fairly traditional winch challenge style. I think the plan is for at least 6 stages. Two trucks will start from side by side start boxes and will appear to be racing each other. This makes it look good for the public (Yes, Saturday is has access for the public) but in reality the two tracks have nothing to do with each other.

Sunday is planned to be a single long stage. At this point we are still waiting to confirm access to a small section of land. Trucks from each class will start simultaneously, but we have a plan that will separate them out a bit at the start. At this stage it is planned to be two or three laps (depending on class) of the course. Nothing is set in stone yet but a test drive down one section took about an hour. Race pace is estimated to have that section take 30 minutes. So one whole lap could have an hour of driving. This lap includes a section through the property used for the Canterbury winch challenge. So there is plenty of option to shorten or lengthen the lap once we have done some testing. In any case, If we get the land we need, Sunday will be spectacular. Hours of seat time rather than minutes.

Today we went out to the new property to make some tracks. It was a blank canvas. Fairly flat, but hey that's Christchurch (and this property is only 10 minutes from town). This property has a water table in it that keeps it nice and wet. It's good and bogy in places, but not bottomless. Didn't get many photos as I was on the end of a winch rope or saw most of the day.

Saturdays property.

Yes, this was the best way through. Damn it.

Spent this afternoon (till 9.30pm) in the river sorting out a section of the Sunday enduro stage.

There are wider parts of the river that will have have two way traffic on them, but these parts are fairly wide and will be well marked. For the most part though one direction of the track is in/near the river and the other direction is on a track next to the river.

The section I worked on this arvo should equate to 15-30 minutes of driving at race pace. It's about 5 or 6 kms and will likely only have one to three winches in it. There are still plenty of bits that will slow you down and make you think about where you are driving. Navi's may need to get wet to check out where there drivers need to go.

This is just one section of three main parts to the lap.

I mostly forgot to take photos, but here are a few.

This one is before we did some trimming.

Besides this section there is a blast up a MUCH wider section of a different river. And Some reasonably sweet hilly farmland, part of which is new, part of which had the cust challange on it.

It's going to be choice.

Wondering if you have any more info on what's happening/where Friday? Had planned on coming along on Saturday, but forgot that I'm going to the races.

Sorry I don't. Apparently we no longer have access to the piece of land in the city. There is still racing on Friday night and there was a working bee there over the weekend, but I don't know where.

I can tell you that the Sunday stage is going to be epic! Was doing some more track setting/marking. I reckon a solid 35 to 45 mins per lap and am told about 4 winches (but I haven't seen the whole loop yet). That is a sweet stage.

Update from the club.

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php? ... 24&fref=nf

Only 3 days to go till NZ1 held in chch. There has been some major changes in the last couple of days. The land which was going to be used in town is now unavailable. Both Friday and Saturday will be held at the airport end of Sawyers Road. Trucks will be there from 5pm, stages start at 7pm. Saturday still 10:30am start. So far 23 trucks will be competing, included in this is 8 of our Mainland Superwinch Series trucks. Remember our Series guys/girls still don't know who won the Series yet (prize giving sunday night).
Clubman Class has 3 trucks, all 3 are Series trucks, these guys will be giving it all they have as they have been competing all year in the Mainland Series.
Open Class also 3 trucks and again the 3 trucks have been competing in the Mainland Series all year. They are the top 3 trucks so the battle here will be very interesting.
Outlaw Class with 7 trucks competing. 2 Mainland Series trucks, Mike Holmes and Sav Satherley have been head to head all year. The other 5 trucks are pretty well set up and hopefully contenders for 2015 Mainland Series.
Finally we have the extra Class, Ironman. 10 trucks in total. These guys follow the same stage lines as Clubman. Some names I recognise, some I don't. Hopefully they will catch the bug and be in the 2015 Series also.
Good luck to you all. Remember I need to get all trucks together for a photo shoot. Looking at doing this while the Marshalls are being briefed Friday night.

I would like to put a Huge thanks to all the marshells who helped out for this event sometimes we forget what these guys get put through and im sure a few of them coped a but of flack on saturday morning as things fell to peices, and no one knew what was happening. we cant do these events without the help of these guys and im really pleased that most stepped up to help out in any which way they could and to those who made a huge effort with big roles (u know who you are) it was noted at the prizegiving and we thank you. We had an awesome day on sunday along with most others even though SHE smashed the truck, with a few things ironed out i think it would be a good addition to the winch challenge series. Also what you Ironman guys did to Ash's place top work you guys are awesome and was sweet to catch up with some of you, and im sure we will do it again sometime soon.

Cheers Leigh

I think there was only one North Island entry, and I seem to remember seeing their buggy being towed back on the Sunday. If you PM me your email I can forward you the results spreadsheet if you want. Cheers Andy.
May the force be with you.

The 90 having a little lie down, pulled it forward, and a little more level (deeper though) and she started first touch of the key. Pity we didn't have a electric winch, we might of got out our selves out.
Cheers Bob (Quad racer) for the recovery. Thanks to the Marshals, and super winch for putting up the seasons main prizes.

Bring on next year in a new truck

sounds as though it will be a fun comp next year, with a few more teams coming out of the woodwork :-)
