the taupo 1000 is a mega endruo race .. heaps of people give up before they finish .. its that hard

The Taupo is as hard as you want to make it ! The harder you drive the harder the event is for you. Its a nice fun drive with speed, as much as you want and your competing against your class vehicles. So if its class 6 (winch trucks road legal) then welcome aboard if your class 2 then have fun. If you want to know anything about the Range Rover prep feel free to call . cheers darryn

how much gas are you taking?? your rover will make you bankrupt!! 1000kms pushing the v8 hard...

take spare leaf springs, and axles. better yet take a complete donor vehicle if possible!!

Therefore, for nostalgic reasons I think we should refer to this event as the Undie 1000!

I've been going through the ORANZ Rulebook to see what we are going to need to do. There are a few things I've identified that we are going to have to replace/sort out on the POS. Stinky, the first thing we are going to do is the rollcage... I will definitely be driving it like a Nana until that is sorted ;)

Rex, the suspension is definitely something we'll have to look at. Watching some footage from 2007 it looks like it's pretty rough in places and I doubt the current setup will last 1000kms. The least we'll have to do is have plenty of spares :D

yes and for nostalgic reasons i think the fence paint job (ten years old now) should be touched up as well. Anybody have any green and brown fence paint lying around

It has twin tanks so holds 100 litres. But yeah your right. perhaps should start stock piling it now while gas prices are cheapish  buy 10 litres a week and then it wont come as such a shock

Ha ha "leaf springs" dont forget to take a replacement spine x2 for the drive home...... the rover V8 used 80 ltrs of fuel every 200 ks at taupo thats four laps to a re fuel, 2nd day pushing harder droppred down to 3 laps all in all used 450 ltrs took 1000 to the track didn't have a clue how much it would use. Then Woodhill 100 in the sand 80 ltrs to 100 ks very hard on gas. This year the AV gas is $3 a ltr so my fuel budget will be $1350 for the race and say another 160 ltrs $480 spare for screw up in calculation total $1830, 610 ltrs in fuel. All carried in 5ltr containers for OSH lifting requirements ! Nah in hard to manage 200 ltr steel drums distributed into 20 ltr jerry's at the track.

Where are you getting Av at $3 per liter? I buy it at the Whangarei airport and it is only $2.35. From memory is was about 15 cents per liter cheaper if bought by the drum via Mobil.

Mentioned it to someone the other day they said $3 havn't checked it out yet as I don't buy it till the week before the event. So its a tongue in cheek price really. I'll buy mine in Auckland theres a place in Penrose ...........somthing Petrolium can't remember the name just now.
Don't see your entry in the taupo 1000000, you going to enter the rocket into this race, there is class all sorted for you. All you need to do is turn up, point and sqwirt...... so to speak

Seeing how the motor is coming out tomorrow and getting stripped fine the funny knocking sound inside it, probably not. Business isn't good enough to be able to afford to do it, particulary as I'll need 8 new shocks as well!

Ha I have a similar problem my engine has become an Arthritic, Asthmatic ! The vehicle bends like a oven tray when lands, all this offroad racin stuff is very hard on the metal components, so am having to put some more bars in it.Thought of a coctail bar in the rear and a garden bar up front. Maybe we'd be better off going as support team to this Mike character !

wasn't held last year. Its only every two years.

Simon Gilbert did 9 laps in 2007 in the paddock car but it was a wreck afterwards.
His way of communication to pit crew was texting..............

He rolled it trying to text and drive at same time............

Well, just came across this... Actually it was on HEIDI's second lap that she rolled in 2007, and your right it was due to her driver (me) txting. She went on to suffer some extream damage to suspension throughout the rest of the race. The rollover, other than gaving a her a few bruises, poping her rear window, and the coil lead coming off, no damage done. Lap 2 on Sunday hit a bad bump far too hard and got stunning amounts of air. Front right strut fell out before we landed... had fun hunting for enough cv balls so stuff in with moss to get her home to pits... Still racing at race finish.
Wreak? Hell no! HEIDI was brusied and sore, but not wreaked... I should show you wreaked some time!!!!
2009 Taupo 1000...
Sprint lap, terrible vis, had to drill holes in windscreen.
Saturday... testing home built prototype suspension. Stunning for short moments, heaps of problems. Total suspension colapse on all four corners half way around lap 4. Limped home.
Sunday... went racing! 8 laps. Zero pit time. One fuel stop.

HEIDI wreaked now? Hang no... she is just warming up!
