Lost in the sands of time, Vandy Road, near Raglan, appears at first sight to be a road to nowhere. Rumour has it that it does eventually descend into Makomako, but that's what it is at this stage - rumour.
Designated primarily as a walking track, Vandy Rd is nevertheless a right of way and as such open to you and your 4WD.
A man-made pothole at the start of the unmaintained portion of the track will test vehicles thoroughly: the mud is quite gooey, and a stream ensures it never dries out.
While there are many large trees to help you winch your way in, no such luck is afforded on your way out, so good ground anchors would be a useful precaution.
Definitely hard-yakka country, the track becomes heavily overgrown with numerous washouts, slips and quite narrow places where those who have boldly gone before have carried out rudimentary repairs. Nonetheless, a magnificent track worthy of a whole weekend's exploring.
How to get there:
From SH23 Hamilton-Raglan, turn south into Waitetuna Valley Rd some 18km from Raglan. Follow this for 6km, then turn right into Vandy Rd.
(Any one been in here? track condition / access, anyone keen to go for a look)?
Vandy Rd 4wd track still open?
