how much blow by is bad?

Postby fish » Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:34 pm

i used to own a 89 bighorn and it died a long death because of worn rings causing blow by.
im curently looking at buying a 93 bighorn and it looks tidy.
i couldnt find the breather to test if it had any presure in the crank case like my old one so i popped the dip stick out and there was a bit of gas blowing out there.
my question is, is this at all normal and ok? obviously there has to be some pressurisation but how much if any?

why not get a compression and leak down test done.
rain, hail, sleet or snow, we go!

if it has lots of blue fumes coming out dipstick tube, its toast. but make sure you do the dipstick test when engine is up to temp

If it's diesel the other thing to keep in mind is that the motors are known to be heavy breathers, even low milage and in good condition.
There are kits available to help with the problem.

you can get a custom catch can specific to the isuzu from a mechanics in chch called AMMA MOTORS, they are specially designed for the isuzu and for the blow by, also the bonus is the catch can set up is its fully water tight.

i have one of these on mine and it does a great job, my oil consumption is down except rear main still leaks.

I have 340km untouched internals and just unplugged the crankcase breather from the air intake and vent it down near the chassis. Plugged the air intake side obviously. Works great only concern would be deep river crossings i guess
