Got a V8 4X4? A suggestion...

Postby petefj40 » Sat Sep 28, 2013 1:13 pm

I suggest, for shits and giggles, installing a set of these from badlanzHPE.com .

They work really well.

What's the legality with the dumps emptying under the cabin? I assume as long as the std pipes are used for everything other than "track work" then they are fine?

Dumps not allowed for on NZ streets, would be a race vehicle only thing.

Those valves in video not legal for nz roads either,

As cool as they are, it could get expensive have to change back to original for wofs... Dumb really because it would give the driver the ability to drop down the noise in residential areas. Guess they gotta make the rules because of the few who would only make it quiet around the authorities...

Have mates with them fitted. There's no problem with WOF's.
But there's always someone who knows everything.

yep had them on the hilux, 3 inch one from each turbo charger on the Rb30/26 combo.

one muffler for each pipe and straight out the side in front of the left rear wheel.

never had an issue at wof time.

under reasons for rejection
4. The exhaust system is so constructed or modified that its operation or effectiveness can be readily interfered with, eg the driver is able to interfere with the exhaust system by operating a manual switch, or the exhaust is fitted with a flame thrower kit.

cool idea. not technically legal. pretty lol that vtnz guys fizz up about them, they should really be failing a wof on them.
typical 'v8/harley' crowds getting away with whatever they want

I guess a backing plate and some butterfly nuts to cover it until at the track might suffice to keep the fun police happy. Be a bitch to get too with a low vehicle - although I guess they would only have to be there for the WoF etc.

Was considering something similar for my rod project, but with gasser style pipes down behind the wheels and a dump pipe venting outwards when opened but a full normal exhaust when its closed. Might just revisit that idea if the rules wont allow it. :?

reminds me of a comment a commentator at the v8 super cars once made. about how all the castrol/perkins built commodores ran full length exhausts compared to all the rest.

That's the one. It's easy enough to take the butterflys off (they un-bolt and wiring unplug) and replace them with plates if there's any issues.

I meant that a few others I know have a similar setup on their street legal rides and have no issues with WOF's. But clearly as Cameron stated, if the system can be modified with a switch they fail a WOF. Try and find mine. ;) Oh that's right, mine will be labeled boldly on the dash "FUCKEN LOUD SWITCH".
But you're right Slide, the rules are crap.
