Mabey, but not likely

Some ZJ's had the AW-4, but I dont believe they were export models which we see.

In general in NZ
The XJ uses the Japanese Aisin made A340 transmission found in Pajeros, Bighorns, Surfs, Lexus etc, it has a differnt output shaft spline for the american transfercase.

The ZJ uses the 42RE American made Torquefilte.

Thanks for that so just to confirm, if someone with an ZJ trans for sale it would not fit my XJ

It will fit bell housing and drive shaft wise, but the transfer case is different (full time 4wd) and the wiring is completely different.
It will fit with a bit of work, but not as strong.

Cool thanks for that its in a trials truck so it needs to be strong I am running a landcruiser transfer case and have a 25mm adapter plate to butt them up. what would you recommend replace thetrans with or would you stick with a standard xj?

What sort of diffs are you running????
A landcriuser won't fit up, the spline count is wrong.
If you are running hilux/prado/landcruiseror better yet safari axles then use the hole prado transmission, swap the bell housing, torque converter, input shaft (cable) and you will have no adaptors and a valve body thet will change gears in manual form, much better for compition.

Hi XJ
The head is off at the moment, light port/polish, cam being reground for more torque mid range.
The motor is not capable of producing to much grunt as it is a return flor head design which heats up the incomming air to much, there was a out fit ni the states making cross flow heads and acheiving great results.
