Let the 4.7HO fun begin
Well I picked up the new Overland, Jeez it's got some squirt! Not sure how long those rear tyres will last, evertime I take off it churps at the back wheels it may have something to do with the sound coming from the back
It was in very nice condition except the Front left Hub is a bit noisy so I'm going to replace it.
Any rules of thumb when it comes to replacing them or is it just standard BNT issue part? I know that these things sometimes don't like non jeep parts
Any leads for cheap kits would be great as well

Cheers Yeti,
I already got a quote or two but sometimes somebody knows somebody who knows someone who has one sitting about in their shed etc etc
Nobby question: Can you re-condition them, guessing not as they look pressed on
I need a jeepspares.co.nz as I already mis the good info/deals/advise from landroverspares.co.nz but he told me to fck off when I asked him to bring in jeep parts.

Try www.rockauto.com and get Timken bearings. Thats what factory had installed.
Don't get me started on the tyres, both our previous sets have only lasted 35k on average. Goodyear and then Bridgestone. I am going with BFG Rugged Terrains tomorrow.
Front and rear LSDs don't help. Nor does the exhaust tone.

XJ, not bad prices... A lot better than some of the prices I have been quoted.
I know a guy who knows a guy who works for a guy who is a supplier, so i need to get hold of him
Although, now I have done some online research I really want to get it up in the air so I can double check that it is a bearing...

Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
Spent a far amount of down time researching the noise from the front end,
- It dosen't change when under load
- Dosen't change when cornering
- fairly consent
The prevous owner was chasing the same noise and the replaced the bearing in the diff and replace the hub, that explains why I have a spare
result: It's a jeep thing. I will inspect the diff and change the fluid, check to ensure the nothing is rubbing and monitor to see if it gets worse...
Am I off the mark? I am a spanner whomble after all

Can you describe the noise a bit more. Does it change with speed? What happens when you apply brakes, lightly vs hard.

Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
Right oh TJ
Going through the mechanic history of it and reading up on the web suggests that previous owner before was chasing the noise and had the ring bearings on the diff changed and then the left wheel bearings. It came with a used front hub kit which I thought was odd but I suspect that he changed it only to find that there was nothing wrong with the original.
The lady owner I bought it off says it’s always been like that.
It’s an intermittent rubbing noise that starts at low speed and gets louder and more constant the higher your speed.
Accelerating or braking, turning does not change the sound to any great degree.
The noise is still there when you put it in N at the gear box. I haven’t tried putting the transfer box in N and coasting down a hill though, what would that achieve?
The brakes do feel a bit warped but I’m not concerned about them at the moment and will replace in time. I did think that maybe the brakes were binding but it doesn’t pull and there’s lots of meat on the pads.
There is a little binding when on full lock at low speed but I think that the LSD engaging and disengaging?
My mate who’s a mechanic thinks it’s the bearings but he is a replacement mechanic; ie: he just replaces shiet. He couldn’t find any movement in the wheel when lifted though
I’m going to check the cv boots, shock mounts etc and rotate the tyres to see if that changes anything.
Failing that I want to get all 4 wheels in the air and maybe listen to it then

Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
are you sure its not the front driveshaft?
is it more of a whiney sort of noise?
the cv joint in mine had abit of play init so replaced the driveshaft and noise gone?
get under it and have a look at the cv and give the shaft a twist back an forward and report back

I agree as well. Being full-time 4wd, front driveshaft is under load. When you put the transmission in neutral, the transfer case and the front driveshaft are still connected to the diff (and rotating).
Otherwise, have a look at the fan and power steering pump. Fan is hydraulic and driven off the power steering pump. It could be due for a power fluid change if it smells burnt or looks dark in colour.

Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
Hi Pete, sounds like road noise, I thought of the front diff/ TC but thought it would change tone under load, and not be constant
I tried putting the transfer case in N and cruising down a hill, couldn't be certain but I didn't hear it. saying that but I didn't want to go to fast without gearing
TJ, I will check all the fluids etc this weekend and flush if need be.

Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
I have tracked down the noise to the TC/ Shaft so I'm not so concerned now. Time to drive and enjoy
God damn that thing chubs me up
Apparently I'm the only person that can hear the noise anyway, it's there but nobody else thinks it's out of place.

Or the stereo is too quiet - you need subs.
Re: Let the 4.7HO fun begin
Got the noise sorted with a cable tie, yeah baby
As for the stereo, 10 speakers is enough for me. But whats the point in a a big bore full noise mother fcka exhaust that rumbles like.... well, a mother fcka if you don't listen to it
