TJ Radiator Fan

Postby Tonkatoy. » Fri May 01, 2015 8:47 am

Hi Guys.
My visco(?) unit on my fan has blown the back off the bearing and is not healthy. My mechanic says that they are expensive & hard to find. Any thoughts where I could get one or should I look at an electric fan with a switch I can turn off when in rivers?

Viscous fan clutches for Jeeps are easy to find, your mechanic is mistaken.

You can have a brand new Hayden fan clutch from Rockauto.com for US$69.69 (including freight) or from Summitracing.com for US$81.17 (including freight). I just had a very quick look. Readily available.

Quadratec.com has it for around US$62.99 (but freight will have to be calculated).

You might want to change the water pump at the same time as well since fan clutch sits on the water pump. Water pump is only additional US$54.99

Remember, if its a Jeep part - always look to the US for ordering them. Heck you can order new parts for a CJ out of US. TJ is very recent.

Just make sure you can figure out whether its normal rotation one or reverse rotation one....

Thanks TJ I knew you'd know :D
How do I tell if it is a reverse one - Is it as easy as which way the fan turns??

I don't know which ones are reverse rotation ones, but I understand the water pump had "R" marked on it if its reverse rotation. Fan clutch for those is also reverse rotation. This site with Jeep OEM parts suggests 4.0 1997-1999 have one part versus 2000-2006 4.0l (http://www.jeepoemparts.com/1999-jeep-wrangler-parts.html)

I guess one way to find out is by finding out whether your fan clutch is attached to the water pump with 4 bolts like this:

OR attached with a nut on the shaft like this:

If you want to pay and get a gold plated solution: http://www.offroadspecialties.co.nz/node/53   There is mark-up, and then there is rip-off.

http://www.quadratec.com/products/51202+03.htm This is whats listed for your year.

http://www.quadratec.com/products/51212+10.htm Water pump for the same model year.

Go on Quadratec live chat when US opens and ask them for the correct part number. Then order from wherever you can find cheapest and quickest.
