New Wrangler?

Postby frederic26 » Thu Mar 17, 2016 1:24 am

Hi,

Does anybody have "inside news" from Jeep about the new wrangler? I read 2017 then 2018...

and most important... is there a chance to see it in NZ...

You'll see it in NZ when it's officially released.

Typically, Wranglers run in 10 year cycles for major changes. 1987, 1997 and 2007 were the last three changeovers between YJ, TJ and JK. New year models hit US dealerships in end September/October (2017 model could hit dealerships in October 2016), because of the way fleet purchasing works in US market. It is then shipped across the world.

No specifics released yet, but JL has been confirmed.

Thanks for the information but why NZ has so much difficulties to have the last models today compared to US if they can get the fresh new one at the same time than everyone? I saw Jeep selling 2016 but it seems that some upgrades are missing or am I wrong?

Looking to see that new model..

Australia and NZ FCA works typical model specs for the market and then order them. Sometimes it has more features, but if you want certain things then you can order a factory build. You'll probably wait for 4-6 months for it to be built and brought here.

So more reason to import it from Japan, no?

Not really. If you are looking for a brand-new one, then why would you want to privately import from anywhere. For one, NZ/Aus specs are better suited for here (eg diff gearing, navigation language, etc). Also, there would be no warranty cover. Vehicle warranties are not international.

What are you after that is not available here as an option?

Nothing in particular, just trying to understand how the dealers work here in NZ. Still don't know if I will move to an unlimited/5 doors as I miss the space but I don't want to loose the excellent maneuverability of the 2 doors. New or a few kms.
I also don't want to spend thousands for accessories that needs to be imported here, so that's why I was looking for a "ready to go" in Japan (after giving up with the US as it will be too complicated). Now if the new wrangler will arrive, I will re-think the whole topic.

Dealers in NZ work the same way they do anywhere else in the world. I don't understand what you are trying to get at.

As for accessories, I don't buy them from Jeep dealer. Whatever I have is from local, Australian or US agents of what I am buying. Bullbars from local ARB dealer for example.

Re 2dr vs 4 dr, you have to test drive both and see what fits your needs. Keep in mind, 2012+ JKs are a very different drive from a TJ or older JK regardless of the extra length of 4 door.

Hi TJ, how will you define the differences in terms of maneuverability, comfort, (automatic for offroad) etc on a recent JK please?

Difficult to put in words, but easy when you test drive one. First off, the Pentastar V6 is 210 kW (vs 134 kW) engine of TJ. Unlike the older V6 in 2007-2011, 2012+ Pentstar VVT engine delivers 90% of torque form 1,800 rpm to 6,300 rpm (very very flat torque curve). http://www.pentastars.com/engines/tech.php

Then the 5 speed automatic transmission, which is Mercedes NAG1 / WA580 unit. Built and used behind Pentstar V6 and Hemi V8, so it can take the abuse.

Frame is heavier and wider. Feels more balanced and sure footed. Control arms are mid length, rides better on road.

Lastly, other standard features like BLD traction control and much bigger factory brakes. Finally, 32" tyres on Rubicons from factory (which allows to move to 33" tyres without too much work).

All of this is evolution, not revolution. But having driven / modified a TJ for nearly 12 years, and JK for over 2 years. Drove both of them together for a year. The whole combination of interior and exterior is a lot more refined and comfortable. It is all subjective, depends really on what do you want it for. To modify and beat it, TJs are becoming much more economical now (i.e. cheaper). To use as a daily driver with occasional trips, JKs are great - and then modify it as it gets older.

Either way, aftermarket support out of US is brilliant for both.
