grand cherokee advice
looking at selling our holden captiva and the Grand Cherokee is an option.
2006 ish shape, possibly the 3 litre diesel or 4.7 v8, leaning more towards the 5.7 v8. sounds nice.
any don't buys or really goods? will do some towing of my surf or horse float but mainly just driving.
handy to have the 4wd, maybe some shinier safaris.
do they have an option to run in awd?
there is different 4wd systems, which is better? in any.
realise not the cheapest to run but cheap to buy so evens out.

Re: grand cherokee advice
see if you can get one with the "Quadra-Drive" option, as they are the ones with the LSD front and rear, which makes them very capable. I followed a bog standard one through a deep cut out on North Range Road(Palmerston North) which had opposing cambers front and rear, and the driver just put it through real slow and careful, it lifted a front wheel 40cm off the ground, but the LSDs did their thing and he went through without any drama.
Re: grand cherokee advice
Thanks, will check that.

Re: grand cherokee advice
Friend of mine has a 2011 diesel grand Cherokee
Had the same wagon in v8 but because he like the rumble it got expensive to run from flooring it everywhere especially when towing
Both of his have been the jeep awd setup
Good all round wagon but did struggle a bit towing 7.6m hard top
So I talked him into a dirty old 80 for the hard yards

Re: grand cherokee advice
I don't see many of the 5.7 litre models. Plenty of the 4.7s though. My jeep mate suggests that the v8s sound awesome, are very thirsty(not a huge issue if you don't do a lot of km), they are "plush" to drive, and the auto trans can develop issues if it hasn't been serviced.

quite underpowered for the size, 172kw versus 183kw for the V6 1GR prado which is now the other choice.

do about 20,000 a year, so 8-10 years driving for the difference in purchase price and fuel usage to make both cost the same, between the grand Cherokee and prado. (not including repairs)

that sounds like the biggest issue with them, was googling last night.

Re: grand cherokee advice
was using a 2000 with the 4.7 in for towing the other thing round ......drinks good but I like the sound .....auto on mine was sluggish when cold , as in once up to running temp was fine .......if I had kept bigger oil cooler ....would do more home work on the 4.7 and heat , just shit I've read on yank forums......bang for buck very nice ...excellent on long trips away........sold mine and brought a 56 Vauxhall cresta,,, ....use me lady's Prado for towing it now ...slow sad uncomfortable but gets us there ......

Not sure didn't really ask what it is
Mate did say it's a Mercedes power plant

Re: grand cherokee advice
straight 5 cylinder I believe.
Re: grand cherokee advice
V6 prados go great. But our one got between 14-20l per 100km. Normally around 15/16. Heaps of grunt. Really comfy especially if you get a leather one. Toyota traction control is hat to beat off road. Would idle through with two wheels off the ground. Much better than my 2015 dmax. Towed really well.
Re: grand cherokee advice
Was that a lot of town driving? We do mostly open road driving and usually average 1-2 litres less than the stated usage.

Re: grand cherokee advice
I've recently bought one. 4.7 HO
As expected I liked to hear some exhaust note when I first got it. Trip computer said 15l/100km. It actually used 18l/100km. $100 for 250km in a mix of around town highway...
Good long distance I got about 12l/100km out of it.
My falcon 4.0 ute did 10l/100km on a good run so for 3 extra seats, full time 4 wheel drive, luggage space & V8, It's not too bad.
They're pretty cheap to pick up now and are pretty capable beasts. Everything uses fuel, these just use a little more
