New Jeeper

Postby Wrangled » Fri Oct 05, 2007 2:35 pm

Hi,
I am new to the forums.

I have just bought a wrangler 2000 and thought I would introduce myself.
I have been using learning to use a 4WD for a couple years (on old surf).

When I bought my Surf it was fairly well kitted already,
but my Wranglers is pretty much factory standard.

I have read lots of comments here in the forums and I think I will be going to upgrade 31" with a 5 inch lift and a snorkel for starters.

My mechanical skills are pretty much at the basic service level and i know my limits. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone good to fit the mods or where to go to get them?

Or if I should definately get one thing over the other...
I have a budget of about 7-8k for mods.
What do you think I would get the best value from?

Cheers!

gidday pal..... Auckland 4x4do some good work, but TJ on the forums here will be able to fill ya in better than me. Have a good look at the lifts mate.... 5 inches is a long way, and youlll be wanting 33's with it. 2 inch and 31's is a good fit. For a 2 inch theres "justjeep" on trademe that does a couple of 2inch options and with the right gear its an easy enough option, and an affordable option for a first lift too. A 5inch is likely to set ya back thousands, driveshaft/springs/shocks/pannard rod/trailing arms all should be done, wheres a 2 inch you can get away with springs and shocks..... get a feel for the wagon there and you can always go up if ya want.
Mines up just under 5 inches and i love it, my wifes is 2 inches up and it has some advantages that mine doesnt. dont rush into it, have a good look at all options.........

And welcome.... thank lord for another Jeeper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as far as your budget goes -

Purchase price ballparks:
$3000.00 ARB front and rear lockers
$450.00 ARB compressor to run lockers
$1400.00-$1600.00 ARB winch bar (dont like them myself but hey)
$1000.00 - $1500.00 9-9500 lb winch
$1000.00 - $5000.00 various size lift
- $2000.00 if you feel you need a slip yoke eliminator with a big lift. (Some say you do, some say you dont, mines just off 5 inchs with stock driveshaft and its fine, just dropped the transfer case about an inch)
$450.00 8 x 15 inch rims
$1400.00 31 - 33 inch tyres
$500.00 rear bar and swing away tyre carrier
$300.00 - $700.00 replace exhaust system minus the cat
$550 - $700 safari Snork (waikato 4x4 was a truckload cheaper than their auckland counterparts)

+ labour costs....... say, i dunno, $2500.00

the list could continue..... heaps could be done man, the world is you oyster... Richard at Auckland 4x4 has bough a Wrangler not too long ago, he'll be able to set ya right too i guess.

Wopass - i take umbrage at being called a nutter.... freak yes.... nutter no.

Welcome fellow Jeeper. You can run 31" on a stock TJ if you don't disconnect front sway bar. A 2 or 2.5" lift can easily run 32". Not much involved in this size lift.

At 5", you better be prepared for a big $$$ budget. As XJ said, it would involve SYE, new driveshafts, control arms, panhard rods, steering pitman arm, etc.....

Auckland 4x4 is a good start, I got my Old Man Emu kit from him. He caaries a snorkel as well.

How abt you come to Auckland 4WD Club meeting on 15 Oct and we can discuss things. It really depends on what your main use would be. Remember TJ are short wheelbase, lifting them too much will make it a difficult daily driver.

You are kidding right? My rear ARB bar was a little more than that - may be like missing a leading 1.

Yes it did. But it has two recovery points, class II rated hitch, swing tyre carrier, frame reinforcements, corner protection all built in it. I have a total of 18 grade 5 bolts holding it to the frame versus 6 factory bolts.

To OP, don't be discouraged, Jeeps are built not bought. Also, if you try to raise any short wheelbase 4x4 by 5", you will have to change similarly. Its not just a Jeep thing.
