Alternately i got access to a set of ARB's (used) for 1/2 price....... what's a bloke to do?

sheeeeet, simple maths logic would point me in the direction of ARBs or similar.

$3250 per diff, ouch

but here's the quandry:
Currently - drum rear, disc front, 3.07:1 diff ratios, potential arbs. dana 30 front and 44 rear
Proposed with these - disc rear, disc front, 4.01:1 diff ratios and factory lockers. dana 44 front AND rear.

Whatsmore, heres how the "do it yourself" version in opposition ot buying these would go.....

replace diff gears to 4.0:1 - $1500.00
convert rear brakes to disc - $1400.00
buy lockers to 4.0:1 and fit - $4500.00
Theres $7,400........

I believe the diff ratio would be 4.10, but these are JK (Wrangler) diffs with a different track width compared to a TJ (Wrangler). Also, you would need to get and mount all the mounts for springs, shocks, control arms etc on these diffs before fitting them under your TJ. Its not really that simple, though tempting.

dead right about the diff ratio.... keyboard dyslexia.

im aware of a necessity to mod the mounts, i just dont know to what extent.

Ill sleep on it and probably end up on the side of reason and just get the ARB's.

hi
another diy option could be a grand cherokee zj/zg rear axel as it would bolt straight in and has disk brake , and then aussie lockers front and rear (have you seen the price of them....cheap) and crownwheel and pinion of yer choice.

XJ (the person) has a TJ with Dana 44 rear. Grand Cherokees had either D35 (I6 engine) or D44a (V8 engine). The problem is D44a is aluminium housing and no way near as brute as a proper D44 under the TJ. Actually, most of the swaps are from a TJ under Cherokee or Grand Cherokee because of this reason.

As for disk brakes in the rear, they were factory options in US and there are many kits available on the net for conversion. You can also use Falcon / Crown Vic brakes are they are the same bolt pattern.

You will need new wheels to use the JK axles because they have a different stud pattern so add that cost to your calculations as well. I wonder if the guy on Trademe has managed to sell any of the axles, did he say he had 5 sets?

True, almost forgot that to add. JK has 5x5" stud pattern versus TJ 5x4.5". WJ (Grand Cherokees) also have 5x5" pattern, wheels off a WJ should be okay.

May be we should put all these comments to the seller on Trademe, because he is promoting them as almost an easy swap for "all" Wranglers (which would include YJ, TJ and JK).

Just remembered, I thought you were getting ARBs for half the price from somewhere. What happened with them? If you are not interested, I am sure some of us would be definitely interested.

thing with teh JK diffs is that everything on them is NEW, nothing would be leaking or need rebuilding, and the brakes would be really good
