Crank Position Sensor for XJ

Postby downunderxj » Wed Jan 23, 2008 10:45 am

I am looking at importing a new CPS for my '95 Cherokee as I am experiencing an intermittent problem where the Jeep will just shut down for 20 minutes all by its own. It will crank over but not fire. According to a number of forums including NAXJA it is the CPS as it is not a matter of if you need to replace it, it is when you will need to replace it.

http://www.discountjeepparts.com will provide a replacement at $US76.95 + P&P, while GT Chrysler here in Wellington will charge me $235 + GST, I believe the choice is obvious.

I am considering buying two, keeping one as a spare so was wondering if anybody else would like to be included in the order

Cheers
Ian

That would be great, haven't heard back from the American guy with pricing, they can be a bit slow. Just a price for now, note that each model's CPS is different.

The one in the Wrangler was bought from PanPacific (which for some reason we no longer deal with) for $167.63 and carried the part number PC176. I dont know if its the same part, who knows what matches with what on a Jeep?

Hey, change your signature!!!! And how was the couch?

Anyway, here is what I found for CPS for an XJ.

http://www2.discountjpparts.com/parts/p ... or&dp=true

I can try the dealer here in Auckland and see if they are reasonable (they have been in the past).

Thanks to both you guys for finding those other suppliers, at least we have got a bit of Jeep discussion going on this forum, makes a change from all the Nissan/Toyota stuff.
I will have to have a look at both those sites, and figure in shipping etc.

I've just signed up to http://www.off-road.com , an American site with all sorts of weird and wonderful machines, but also a huge Jeep section. Heaps of info and good fellas to deal with.

I checked with Continental Cars in Auckland yesterday when I was there for something esle and the guy said there are about five different types of CPSs used on XJs. Better give them a call with the part number as he said they range from $180 to $380, depending which is applicable for you. If you do Continental a call, talk to Blair at Jeep parts, he is very helpful and reasonable in pricing (or as reasonable as he can be with Jeep original parts).

Thanks for the info - just tried ringing them from work and wondered why the phone kept ringing, until I realised it is Auckland Anniversary and I am in Wellington  so I will try again tomorrow.
I have also emailed SummitRacing for a shipping quote so should have a good comparison.

 yeah, we should all have holidays together.

Bummer about SummitRacing as I have a shipment enroute from them (could have shared the shipping!!). They are really good in response. For a small item like that I would say shipping should be around USD50 through USPS. May be you can order other stuff to spread the shipping.

Update - I got a local mechanic to remove the sensor as when I rang Continental they said there were 5 different ones so I needed the part number off the one in the jeep. Now that I have the part # they quoted me a price of 229 + GST so not much cheaper than GT Chrysler here in Wgtn.
When I search the American web sites the part number equates to a 93-96 ZJ Manual, not a 95 XJ Auto, however a guy on NAXJA has said it doesn't matter.
So I am just confirming with discountjeepparts and will probably get from there.

I did stumble across a chinese company through alibaba.com which manufactures the CPS and you can buy 100 at a time, could be interesting, I am sure they would be a lot cheaper than retail here.

So jeep is definitely immobile for the weekend

Just tried them, they only deal with trade customers, so it was a no go for me. Tomorrow morning I will get on the phone to the US and order 2, will end up about the same as 1 from the dealer here.

Thanks

Rang discountjeepparts today in the US and ordered two at $US76 each, we will see how long it takes them to arrive.

During my searching I had come across a company in China via Alibaba.com. They manufacture various automotive sensors including a replacement for the part number (56026921). So I emailed them enquiring what cost, minimum order was something like 100. This evening I got an email back from them - $US5.50 each, unbelievable what the middle man makes out of the deal.

Might have to go into business

I've got an order for two coming in from the US at the moment. I had placed that order before I got a response back from the US company.

Are you having problems with yours too, a '96 should be the same as a '95. I believe it was 97+ that changed

It looks like the 2 I ordered have finally arrived. My wife called earlier to say a parcel from Discount Jeep Parts was delivered to home this morning. I will check contents etc when I get home, will be great to get one fitted and back on the road.
Withdrawal symptoms have been setting in lately with all the Rallywood working bees and trip to Aotea this past weekend.

I am back up and running. Andrew Farmer installed one of the sensors in the Jeep yesterday. Now I have to go for a drive long enough to see if I can or can't reproduce the fault so that I know for sure it was the CPS. At least it is mobile again.

Had a successful drive today along Odlins Road in the Akatarawas which was where I was trying to go at Christmas time when the jeep stopped dead twice. This time there were no problems at all. It felt good to be mobile again. At least I will be able to head into Rallywoods and help with some of the working-bees going on there over April.
