Interested in a GPS tracking system for your 4X4?

Postby petefj40 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 5:17 pm

I did read some where here that there was someone looking into a system that tracks your vehicle. I think installed the cost was around $1000? Anyway..

A work mate's partner started up a company that wires in a gps tracking system that not only tracks the vehicle but disables it any where there is cell coverage.
They do this for a car finance company. If someone stops paying the bill the car is disabled until the funds are paid. Once they finish paying the car off they have the choice of buying the kit as an alarm system.
I've asked her to give me a price on the system and installing it.
Watch this space.

A few years back now Nissan Skylines were going missing buy the dozen per week. Their system was what the police used to foil the shits doing it. Since then they've been a successful privately own local company.

I recently installed one of those type trackers with all the listed functions into someone else's truck. Worked well and was easy to install. Including the purchase price, sim card and my labour came to under $600. Retail installs are going to be a bit more expensive.
Cool how it worked. Txt it and get a system summary, call it and get location or txt a code and stop the engine.
Worth it!

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Saw this in Jaycar today

Unsure as to ongoing costs but setup sounds easy.

I had tracker in my SWB, did not worry about having it monitered as you can txt it and it tells you where it is anyway, for security and police best to hook it up to a horn so you can activate it in the presence of police, makes it fool proof when you find its location

dealextreme.com

$100 US delivered for the tracker.
$8 2degrees simcard. - you top it up whenever it needs feeding. alternately if your cellphone is on 2degrees then you can use data sharing. 1GB of data with the tracker on GPRS mode never runs out.

Same system is sold by a reputable alarm installer in Wellington for $500 with his sticker on it.

Monthly running cost $0 (uses same data plan as my cell)
otherwise it would be about a $10 monthly cost.

Does tracking, st address, comes with remote for horn etc, everything the other trackers do, 24v compatible.

I got the one as mention in the YouTube clip from Trademe for around the $150-$180 mark and had it installed by a TOP guy, system works a bloody treat all apart from the "real live tracking" I have not managed to get that to work as yet the software is not that great in my opinion.

I think this is awesome for the amount of money I spent, also good if you have a smart phone to get the info, map location, status etc sent right to your finger tips.

Cheers

open a port on your router. 9000 - software needs to run all the time. tracker needs to be in GPRS mode. works fine!

With units like the one above what about the small antennas that it has?
Obviously they will give the game away that 'something' is hidden in the vehicle and will forewarn them???

But the small gps antenna needs to be able to 'see' satellites..correct?

It's like my normal gps units - they won't work in the workshop.

The first one I got would work when it was in the boot of my Skyline and was in the garage with the door down, I think the signal must bounce around till it finds its way out because sometimes it shows it sitting in the neighbors yard.

I'm still in touch with the people producing the unit (I've mentioned earlier) here in Chch. The fellow doing most of the work on it works for Tait.

Just a heads up, the new firmware for some of these do not support 2 degrees sim cards anymore.

Mine only works with Vodaphone.

They are pretty cool idea, cheap and are usually pretty accurate.

You can get them ex china for about 80 NZ dollars delivered 15-30 days shipping. cheaper than deal extreme

Ok...

As I mentioned earlier, the chap that I'm dealing with that's producing these units works locally for Tait. I believe the units he can supply us are made here in New Zealand. But I'm looking for more proof on that.
The following is cut/pasted from his last email to me today.

"HI Pete
A safari was stolen from work last week, found it burnt out ion the Ashley river bed
we can supply a system which will suit,
VLD 2000locate and disable full mapping $430 fitted
VL 1000 just locate with uncontrolled turn of option $250 fitted---self fitted $200
let us know if this is what you require

cheers Terrence"

My response to that follows'

"Hi Terrence,

Sorry to hear about the truck. Honestly, it's getting out of hand.
That price sounds great to me.

Can you give me more info on the system so I can cut and paste it to the ORE website please?
Such as on going costs?
Brand of it?
Where it's made?
Who installs it?
Warranty if any?
etc.

I can guaranty you'll have people interested.
Well if you could get back to me asap I'd be grateful.

Regards,
Pete."

I'll keep you posted.

I have one of those Chinese ones....It works by sending a txt to it...
Then it txts back its coordinates or goto a website and dial in your number and it shows on the map where it is...
However as for ongoing costs... the text messages go offshore and you end up paying for an international txt....
Found out the hard way and gobbled up heaps of credit having a play...
Bit of a rip really...
I want a unit that will stay in NZ and only cost local txt's.....
Cheers Calvin
