R50 swap over. zd30 out qd32 in

Postby Bompie » Sat Aug 12, 2017 7:21 pm

Hi
i picked up a tidy R50 with buggered zd30 4 $1500. well i guess it was last owner said it needed replacing. as i have a complete qd32 in another r50 that had rusted out. so far ive pulled both engines out. next part of changeover will be subframes then bolt the qd up. i pulled both engine ecu's and looms. does any1 want to share the info on wiring where theres 1 differant plug going to body loom? also i believe theres a little wiring change on the afm. any helpful info would be appreciated. cheers guys

Pretty sure it was explained as I supplied a bit of info to get it running. Will look through my PMS for any extra info.

On the R50 the AFM and coolant temp wires are taped in with the main passenger side body loom and come out around the same place as the alternator and ac clutch wires. Starter, temp gauge, oil switch are in the drivers side body loom. Everything else is in the center loom that goes straight to the ECU thru the firewall next to where the clutch master would be. Looking at the loom on the floor the engine end has the 3 pump control plugs, crank sensor, and no1 injector lift sensor. So temp and AFM must be again in the passenger side body loom, just a matter of changing the plugs to the correct ones at the engine end and matching them to the correct pins at the ECU end.
As long as it utilises the same method of talking to the trans ECU everything should be OK as the facelift R50 uses a stronger trans, and the 'atessa' full electronic transfer I'd rather leave that in there if I can.

as you say almost everything else plugs straight in as the engine control loom is fairly much separate to everything else probably the same as an R20. Oil switches are all the same, might just have to extend temp gauge sensor as its on the opposite side of the head and maybe switch the sensors if it doesn't read right. The only separate ones on my ZD loom are AFM and coolant temp (ECU), which are in the passenger side body loom. I'm picking AFM could be the separate 4pin connector at the ECU end, temp I havnt located yet but probably the same sensor and plug as the ZD one anyway.

If you do have concerns about the plugs dont be, there is plenty of info on the net and knowledge here that can get it sorted.

Post up a picture of each AFM plug. Although the AFM isn't plugged in you should still be able to start it up it will just throw up the engine check light.

The body plug in question from memory only has two wires that are required and one of them was white with red stripe will have to double check that but pretty sure it was the main power distribution and comes from the dash loom across from the fuse box under the dash.

That one is easy. Positive ,negative and ecu value out

Use the qd a.f.m the zd30 plug will have a temp sender as well for ambiant air temp.

easy fix that one then. thanks. now to sort the body plug. white with red stripe. traced it on the qd body and it goes into the main body loom plug. then i traced it on ecu loom and it goes to ecu pin 56. white wire traces back 2 ecu pin 61& 70. now i dont have a qd32eti ecu pinout but i have some others and they are numbered the same. browsing through a couple of diagrams the 3 pins (56,61,70) always seem to be 12v power supply 4 ecm. i might try and locate a 12v supply from the eccs relay and try to power it up.
Thoughts?

The manual I have has it running through the eccs relay or a simple relay that's switched by the ignition. So test the wire on yye body side with a test light and turn the ignition on. As the eccs relay will still be on the dash side of the loom.

Tonight's update. It runs. i went back to the doner truck and traced the wires. the red/white goes to egi relay pins 3,6,2 the white goes to egi relay pin 7. The yellow/red goes to egi relay pin 5. the black/white goes to fuse box fuses 16,17,21,22,25.
so back to the 2 body loom plugs i joined the black/white together. i joined the 2 white together . i joined the small yellow/red(qd side) to large yellow/red(zd)side. then ran the a 12v+ to white/red. and from that it runs. i havnt hooked up the temp gauge but i know its the small yellow/red on the zd side of body loom plug. hope this info will help anyone else in the same situation.

so i havnt got the truck running 100% yet. it runs perfect untill it gets up to running temp tgen it has a slight fault. if i hold it at 1100rpm it will rev up 500 rpm by itself then drop back to 1100rpm. or if i hold it higher the revs spike slightly. overall once its up to temp it feels dull to drive and lacks power. no check engine light on. even when i unplug the maf sensor and the spike goes away when i unplug maf sensor but it is still dull. would injector pump timing cause any of these problems? thanks Azar

Could do, the ecu has the ability to pull the timing back but of it's only doing it once warm of be looking at the ecu temp sender circuit.

if i unplug the ecu temp sensor the engine light starts flashing. it does go better but still not 100%. have also tryed another temp sensor. same prob. tryed the zd 30 maf. no differance. might just get it running as good as possible and trade it in.lol

Hey bro, sorry havent been on here for ages.
Did you ever get it running right?.. its very interesting to note that I gave up on mine as I had the exact same issue! it would run mint when cold and as soon as some temp sensor kicked on it was a gutless pig and would barely go up a hill. Unfortunately hadnt been on here to see you were now doing one too, but glad to see you eventually figured to just colour match the wires from the odd body plug, and that didnt match i just left unhooked
