15th - 17th March 2013

Postby Sadam_Husain » Fri Mar 15, 2013 4:51 pm

Spent about a thousand hours freeing up dozens of idler adjusters and getting the maze of belts off to swap out the dying/dead power steer pump, when I threw all the belts off the other weekend it didnt make any difference to the steering when the belts were gone :x :? stuck it all back together with anti-seize on all the adjusters and some new belts and refilled the fluid and I've got steering again after the slight turning difficulties I had at the fun trial the other week getting blitzed by all the shinies and shopping baskets :x  jacked the front up and adjusted all the steering stops that were all wound right out.

took it for a quick strop and it steers heaps better, it actually turns now and no squeeling belts anymore and and I've got twice the lock I had :D

So.. How did those steering stops get out that far? I guess that is why it "handled like it was on rails" huh?

there was a reason for it, before I brought it there was a saginaw steering box on it and heath had an opps clipping a log and the wheels flicked around full lock and smashed the steering box off the chassis rail coz the stops were wound in too far and the steering box took all the impact, he adjusted the stops out when he replaced the steering box but I never gave much thought about readjusting them when I swapped the steering box out for a 70 series cruiser box

Okie doke. Sorted then, so when is the fun trial rematch?

I bought a new truck in December, got sick of the rust in the fawdy. 1989 BJ74 SPOA longer springs in the rear and custom springs in the front. Toyota Hi(gh) Mount Winch on the front. Cut down to a ute and 33 inch Swampers. Few other mods too...

If anyone has any info on the Toyota Hi Mount winches that would be appreciated, only thing I can find via Google is the ToyoDIY parts diagram. Be great if I get a hold of a workshop manual or similar.

Hope to fit new radiator hose this weekend. Pic to follow...

Got a call this afternoon, Silver playdoh's ECU has been fixed and on the way back on the courier, fault was the usual with these ... leaking capacitors which ate away at the circuit board....

FJ62:
Transmission slow in changing gears.
Adjusted the kicker cable, now changes smoothly and earlier, temp guage doesnt go so high, feels much better on hills.

Had the opportunity to go for a drive up .............(somewhere I cant tell you) yesterday to do a reccee for a community MTB ride. The track was real good 2wd all the way. I had forgotten how much I like it up there, before the public 4x4 access was stopped we used to drive up there a lot to go hunting for the weekend. The track used to be huge ruts at the top end but apparently DoC spent a heap on the road when they built the new hut a few years back.

Went away for a week in the housetruck with Suzuki on a-frame. Saturday evening had front tyre on truck blowout on motorway, freaky moment.
Started noticing more noise than usual when driving Suzuki around Auckland. Though that I would look into it a bit more when home. Was in Thames on the monday and was staring to get worried about the noises so climbed underneath to investigate.

Found the noise was coming from the transfercase so thought I would check fluid level, opened filler cap and had grey-brown milky oil pour out everywhere. Found that the boot around the shifter had come off and I must have gotten water in there when crossing rivers.
Flushed it out and put new fluid in, and carried on on trip.

Got home yesterday, pulled t-case out and partly apart, seems all good apart from a few bearings. Will do a bit more when I find where I put all that motivation.

Stayed at a lodge on Erua road this weekend and spent yesterday cruising round with a whole bunch of like minded french car sickos.
checked my articulation, and as you can see it flexes rather nicely.
terrain was a bit rough for lincoln as he didn't bring the lada so he left his car parked on the hard stuff in the background of the pic.

Just about finished the SJ crawler box conversion for my Jimny. Have to borrow a dial gauge to check end float / shim requirements then can finally offer it up to the Jimny for the first time!

Then I need to find somewhere in chch who can modify the driveshafts and suppy the 2 missing flanges - any suggestions??
