D21 Navara in the USA

Postby Wacked » Tue Nov 24, 2015 1:45 am

Yea, I'm a Yank.

Got a wild hair and bought a small diesel Ute a few weeks ago in LosAngeles. Drove it across country 2500K to its new home by Sturgis South Dakota. It's a double cab, 4wd, manual, and non-turbo.

I need to turbo it, but I knew that going into the game.

Don't know much about this little TD27 and have very limited access to parts. Joined this forum because because your members seem to have good knowledge on mods and maintenance of this 25 year old Nissan.

Motorcycles are my 1st choice for getting off-road, but when I take friends or family, I have a '03 Xterra that gets beat on and a topless V8 FJ40 that's turned into more of a garage queen.

Cheers,

Welcome Wacked!
You'll find the D21 Navara is pretty similar in chassis parts to your Xterra (or a WD21 Pathfinder too). Heaps of parts available for those over there (try rockauto.com)
As far as the turbo is concerned search Ebay as their are some Aussie companies that sell the Garrett turbos from the TD27ETi (by memory the actual code name is a Garrett GT2052)?

Thanks for the Garrett lead. I will check that out.

Photos. I have a couple on my iPhone and will try to find how to post.

Welcome wacked. Is yours a JDM Navara? Or a USDM Hardbody with a TD27 from a salvaged forklift shoehorned in? If it was originally a Z24 twinspark gasser it will have 4.875 diffs standard

The "Wild Hair" is a JDM model 4dr crew. Got lucky..... I bought in w/o seeing it as it was in a container enroute from Japan and it's quite clean, good on rust, appears to have been babied. Like any used vehicle, has a couple of things to sort out. Has 94000KM on the clock. May have been cheaper to shoe-horn a diesel under the bonnet of some blown import but i have too many projects already.

One of the annoying things about this JDM model is the alarm that goes off when it hits 110. Can anyone explain where the beeper is located under the dash so I can give it a snip?

Here's the "Wild Hair". Parked it inside for the winter now so I don't get salt and winter chemicals all over it to eat away at the body panels.

Drove through MOAB area bringing it back from California. Hope to get out there this spring again and do some off-roading. Have been out there twice on a bike and it is over-the-top incredible.

Cheers,

Looks pretty tidy. keep it serviced, and the rust out of it, and i'm sure it will serve you well.
