surf engine conversion
surf engine conversion
I've got an '89 surf 2.4 diesel turbo and want to chuck a petrol engine in it maybe v8.Can't do it myself and need advice on engine choice, cost, and who to go to in manawatu area
Theres a heap of options - Holden V6 as mentioned, and Lexus V8 are common options, but cost $$$ - the best bang-for-buck conversion would be the Supra Swap - Toyota 5MG-EU engine - 2.8litre 6-cylinder. If you find a 5-speed Supra (MA61 model - early 80's) then you have everything you need to bolt it in - no conversion kits or adaptors required. I bought my car for $500 complete.
There are a few guys here on the forum who have this conversion, so you can get heaps of info and photos of it - its proven to work very well.
Not sure who you would talk to in the Manawatu - maybe check with the local 4WD Clubs for best options.

what to do help !
ok so ive gone out and picked a a surf so now i need to feed it life but here in lies the problem i justs dont know what to do as there appears to be a shortage of 2.8 surpers it timaru but i did managed to find a 3.0 turbo engine with a dodgey head gasket the person is asking $1000 for it so is this a reasonable price and will if fit my 1986 surf
At that price for a go'er its still $300 more than its worth, with the needed repairs hmmmm it could cost more than its worth to fix!
If you buy it, do conditional that its only a replacement head gasket, any other costs come off first
Another option is CHCH its not too far, and you must be able to find a supra 2-3L at the wreakers you should be lookn around the $600-$700 mark for all you need out of a wreak
Cheers
