abs fault problems
abs fault problems
hi guys
I know its not a true 4wd but has anyone had problems with the abs computer on a holden adventra. ours is a 2004 cx8. the abs fault warning comes on every time the key is turned on, says traction control is turned off, and sometimes says hand brake is on.
its been plugged into two diagnosis machines, they say abs module fault but that's as far as we can get. computer was sent away to be fixed but didn't work, can't find any other problem.
any ideas?
cheers

Re: abs fault problems
when were the brake pads last changed. remembering the holdens run a seperate set of pads for the hand brake too?
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: abs fault problems
front pads june this year, rear pads last year sometime from memory. not sure about handbrake, have to check that out.

Re: abs fault problems
the traction control off is a symptom of the abs not working or self checking correctly it will go away once the abs is remedied. it is to do with the TC using the ABS computer to help control wheel spin.
serveral things will trip the abs fault on start up. worn/poorly adjusted hand brake/shoes
bumped loose/dirty sender plug in wheel arch
the systems inability to self check the abs senders.
although it may seem simply stupid get under the vehicle and check /clean the sensors and rings and plugs, we have a vy series two and it would trigger a abs fault on start up due to a very slow leak of diff oil from the rear diff and allowing build up of crud around one ring and sensor, (inner axle seal) it didn't seem like much at the time and i question the holden mechanic, but the type of gravels/ chip used on nz roads have a high content of magnetite which as you may guess from its name is magnetic and builds up with the road grime flicked up off the road.
It creates an uneven reading compared to the other three corners and the abs ecu will think that sender is faulty.
whats the temperatures like out side when it happens, apparently it is quite common for them to throw a fault on cold mornings.

Re: abs fault problems
all temperatures and weather. it was intermittent but now happens all the time. when it was intermittent you could stop, turn key off, start it again, warning was gone and it said system check ok.
we rarely use handbrake, only when parked on steep hills, which isn't very often.
will also have to test battery, looks like that could cause a problem with the abs computer if not running 100%.

Re: abs fault problems
On some ABS units in incorrect pad change procedure can cause a fault. If the pistons are forced out without the caliper bleed valve open it can damage the ABS unit, 2000 onwards Pajeros are susceptible to this but don't know about the Captiva.
Another problem I've had recently which caused the ESP light to come on the the brake light switch on the brake pedal stopped working so the system didn't know when the brakes were being applied. This is real easy to check, see if the brake lights come on.
Oh, just read that is the hand brake remains on the ABS warning light will come on so check the handbrake switch as well.

would the problem be there instantly if above had happened or could it happen over a year or two? because the abs warning has been happening for a couple of years but was only doing it every few months and got more often over the last couple of months and now every time you turn the key.
handbrake, axle seals, alternator, battery, sensors, all been checked. brake switches still to check.

Re: abs fault problems
From what I've read I shows up straight away on the Pajero's, not to sure about your vehicle. Do you have a OBD2 port? If so you can buy a bluetooth OBD2 port scanner for $18 and install torque on you android phone and it should show you any error codes present. It might even be able to interrogate some of the sensors to give you a better idea of where the fault is.

Sounds similar to your problem.

Re: abs fault problems
wouldn't know about an OBD2 port. i'll have to ask our mechanic.
been plugged into 2 diagnostic machines, 1 couldn't read an error and the other said abs fault and a code, would have to get the code off our mechanic. hopefully it got plugged into another machine today to see if that one could pick up anything else.
been in the garage for over a month and no one can find a problem, computer been away to be fixed and still the same. new one ain't cheap! and that might not be the problem.
just seen this. tried new battery, still the same. could be a plug but the boys have tested all the wiring and say its ok. be nice if its that simple.

Re: abs fault problems
See if you can get that error code off them, that might be the clue you need. It should be in the from C0000 with the 0 being numbers.
Another article http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/to-hell-and-back-8309#.VEta9PmSzLE Read down the page, the test vehicle suffered a similar fault.

Re: abs fault problems
forgot about this one too..If your senders etc come back ok may pay to look at this....It's a multi pin switch not just a conventional on off two pin for your brake lights. contacts could be worn/corroded/dirty as the TC/ABS and Cruse use this too.

^^ defiantly worth a shot.

Re: abs fault problems
been plugged into 2 more diagnostic machines and both said same as others, internal fault code C0550.
no second hand computers in NZ that are compatible so second hand one coming from aussie. quarter the price of a new one.

Re: abs fault problems
Internal write/checksum error. Sounds like the write function us not happening properly, maybe dead flash memory? Maybe someone more electronics literate could shed some light.
Re: abs fault problems
second hand computer in today, all looks good. picking up tomorrow. thanks for the help.
