Mazda bounty / ford courier , wheel bearing harmonic?

Postby Trundle » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:18 pm

So i have a customers bounty that has a phantom issue ,
when driving it expecially on rh corners there is a horrible harmonic / noise from the lhf , Straight away i ensured it wasnt wheel/tyre buldge flat sport un ballance by rotatin side to side and front to rear,
Followed up by removing the hub and inspecting the wheel bearing , the outer race was resonably cooked , brown and had some hair line cracks due to the fact that the manual hub had no sealent/gasket and water had got in, so obviously i renewed the bearings etc and test drove it , still the problem arose ,
Since then i have done the following ,
dial guaged the fron and rear disc/drum and hub faces for run out ,
test driven in 2 and 4wd , hubs in and out , no change ,
problem still arises with lhs on grass ,
checked all ball joints , wheel bearings for play and tie rods etc ,
Im convinced it is front end as you cant feel it through the steering wheel ,
it is also definatly lhs as it is exagerrated on rh turning corners ,
Has anyone had simular issues with these vehicles , obviously the vehicles are very common for cracked heads , rear diffs and gearboxes ,
Its not very often i have such trouble diagnosing such a basic vehicle so i hope someone could shed some light ,

What is the tyre wear like? Is there any scalloping in the tread?

none at all i have rotated the tyres front to rear side to side to elliminate them being the fault and the noise continues when the lhs is on the grass also as i had considered a toe issue

basic huh....
question number 1 what year is it?

question number 2 does it have manual hubs or auto hubs?

question number three. has it had a recent wheel alignment?

02 , manual hubs so its not cv/front diff related , hasnt had a wheel alignment but the noise remains if you put the lhf wheel on grass and goes when weight is off lhf wheel i.e on lh turns ,

had a similar thing on a surf. sorry if i get some of the names wrong. there was crap in where the cv stub axle goes through the hub (and Im calling the hub the bit that the wheel bearings run on and the axle goes through the middle of it). The axle was binding up in there it would catch and the oscillate around in the hub. made a really weird wirring noise and would not happen all the time.

Keep removing things till it stops :D .

Do you mean you "can" feel it?

Have you checked the RH Wheel bearing? It may be the RHS due to the wheel unloading allowing vibration movement to happen and then the loading of it suppresses the situation. Vibrations will also transfer through steel items and emerge in wierd places.

Is it still there if in a different gear, same speed and different engine RPM? Reason I ask is maybe its engine related and while turning a LH corner the engine moves on the engine mounts changing the condition which promotes it.

Best of luck.

sounds to me that the outer CV housing is rubbing on the main hub that the wishbones and caliper bolt too etc failing that the conclusion would be a heat warped outer axle .......you balanced and checked everything else. short of that get a complete LHF assembly from the wrecker and swap it over.

what sorta noise? Humming, clunking, wuring, squeeling, bearing noise etc?

If you havn't already, check the R bearing races for same condition as left before you changed it. if the same then prob not bearing, as same temp etc.
Unless  the no sealant is a clue, has it had FL bearing trouble before?
possibly race not seating properly due to the same rough bloke that didnt use gasket/sealant got a bit heavy with the hamer and punch damaging inside of hub. 2nd hand hub mite be the fix.

Ummmm unlikly I know, shootin in the dark here. maby shock bushes?

been ova some bumpy stuff to see if any other noises arise? can help change the way your aproaching the noise, look at it from a completly diferent view point.

also put a fresh set of ears in the other seats, one at a time as you make the noise just to make shur its FL, try window down and up if you haven't already.

Run it up on the hoist yet? or as you already said its only there under load?
Ummmmmm, no I got jack, you win. Ill ask my man at work on monday, he deals with theese things all the time, we only got like 50 of them

Don't give up I wana know now

I cant remember if i posted it but the harmonic was in the lhf , had a fucked bearing , didnt fix the problem ,
turned out to be the rhf outer bearing case harening , #### knows how it made the noise when going around rh corners as wheel bearing noises arise when loaded , but anyhow , i also found a LH rear bearing case loose in the housing , and had 3mm end float , although that was not causing the noise!!
Another mechanic friend of mine has remote electric stethascopes that you can clip onto shit which picked up the problem ,
Such a basic vehicle to , bigest head ache ever ,
Cheers for help !
