Electric winch Capacity rating

Postby kbushnz » Sat Jul 13, 2013 9:16 pm

Ok so how do they rate electric winches?
I have tried the net but nothing specific.
Looking at sites like WARN comparing the ATV winches and Full size winches.
Some have similar gearbox ratios.
The large 4x4 ones use higher HP motors..Where as the ATV's use lower HP ratings.
Is that all it is???

bigger the motor the better and the look at gearbox ratio to give an indication of speed

the cheepy winches have small motors and very high ratio planarity boxes to make them pull any decent load

just have to remember that electric motors don't like doing 100% loads for any decent amount of time

also look at the rated amps draw if the manufacture gives it, this will give an indication of quality of motor build and an idea of how long your batteries will live for

So my gut feeling is all things being equal...(Drum size, gearbox ratio)
The bigger the motor the higher the rating...
