main points.
oil protection is from oil flow not pressure.
so thicker than normal oil has poorer protection.
you want a thin as possible oil that you can get away with. so closer to minimum pressure is best. but you have to take in account that when very hot, oil thins out, you loose oil pressure and could go below minimum.
so you don't want to go to thin or you improve the oil cooling.
wide spec oils are best for engines that do short trips. ie oil is reasonable thin when cold to provide good cold protection. but the downside is the viscosity improver's they use degrades with use. so better protection but won't last as long.
wider the temp spec the more improver's and also more synthetic oil is used. that increases the cost.
then theres the oil specs themselves. the W spec is measured at 0c while the hot spec is measured at 100c. that gives you a rough idea of how thick it is at the temp your engine runs at.
