True but only the red ones the blues suck out about 2 HP per cylinder, although if you install double overhead chrome grease nipples to your wiper blades then it gives an instant 25% boost to torque from 700rpm (the red ones are less for some reason - must be the type of colouring that makes a difference).
Now the tyre width versus tyre height is an interesting one...

So De-Ranged, who is a suspension engineer and the most qualified person here to answer the question using science and evidence, schooled him. What he said is consistent with pretty much any other professional suspension engineer out there that you talk to.

There are the usual comments above, weight, complexity, diff movement in relation to the tyres etc
Right no one has talked about building and tuning suspension, strength and driveline mechanics aside so this is just about how your suspension can be setup for a particular style of offroad driving
Beam axle suspension hinges north/south in the vehicle where as Independent suspension hinges east/west this means they have different handling characteristics and opportunities
Lets say you want a rock crawler or a trials truck that does well in sidelings... a beam axle works better due to the north/south thing allowing you to raise the rollcenter height, raising the tipping point of the body on the suspension... you can't do this with Independent
But Independent allows you to tune Camber, Caster, Toe in/out, even wheel track gain and these can all be tuned adjust through suspension travel.... at low speed this isn't much of a gain but the fast you go the more this is going to benefit... add a bit of extra complexity in shock valving and sway bars and you match the rollcenter advantage of beam axle
Over all performance goes with Independent
But bang for buck Beam axles will dominate the club truck scene due to strength
The major car manufacturers design there independent suspension for road use and light 4wd'n.... this is the market for first purchase 4wd's, this is also why it is weak, it isn't designed for abuse.... why should they throw there profit margin away so the third+ buyer can have a vehicle that survives
Simple answer and why BIG money is being thrown at Independent suspension in the military and Ultra 4 offroaders, yes it is better in nearly all situations.... if it is designed for the environment it is in
Why are the military spending billions on Independent suspension for offroad vehicles or how about the trend in Ultra 4 racing... its an IFS/IRS truck that is winning the Ultra 4.... guess the driver must be really good because all you hatters know it can't compete
Go back and read my previous post, the only tuning advantage solid axle gives you is a high rollcenter, all that is needed to equal that is a sway bar on an independent suspended vehicle hmmm
Hang on how about the ground clearance issue, pffft this is why the military is so keen on it... when done properly its greater, no diff head hanging down to catch
As for the "Unloading" suspension comment a while back.... this has nothing to do with suspension "type" it has to do with springs yes something we all have in our trucks... and there is something to this, but not what you think. Historically beam axle suspension has used leaf springs and IFS used coil or torsion... the leaf spring is progressive rate where the other two are linear rate, this means the leaf spring will "unload" less... this is a broad generalization tho and you can have linear leaves and progressive coils
