80 series cruiser chassis crack fix

Postby Big » Thu Jan 08, 2015 7:47 pm

This has been done by Al and myself.. I would get anyone who has a 80 to do the same.. as they ALL crack sooner or later

Was asked to put a couple pics for Tom so he can see what I did and a very good mate Al did( he designed and got a couple lazer cut for us) We were told by Peter Watson ( LVVTA) that this is a running repair and did NOT need cert. Al has taken his truck through vtnz loads of times and has not been pulled up about it and was told great job.. anyway Im still trying to find the cad of it for you all so took a couple pictures so you can basically do it your self if you have the steering box removed

It has a big hole under the SB which is covered but is welded to add strength to the plate as a whole, there are 2 smaller holes which have had the same treatment.. as you can see in the pics..It has been cut out of 2mm mild steel or maybe 2.5,, cant remember  but it's not a lot and adds strength to the whole thing as a whole

Enjoy

YIP only outside needs doing but we have been thinking of welding up the whole crush tube on the inside as it is only been what looks like tacked..We think this will stop cracks developing from the welds where they stop and start.. have yet to do this

Was asking about both sides due to the old 91 that i parted out was cracked on both sides complete width of chassis. It was only the upper and lower flat sections holding the front on. Ie recover hooks

That said that wagon had the proverbial beaten out of her and she was still going before decommissioning 8)
