Let's see your Winch Solenoid Mounting Location

Postby stovanovich » Fri Sep 11, 2015 12:07 am

Looking for inspiration for places to mount the Solenoid for my winch, space is tight but let's see what you all have done and maybe it'll spark some ideas in my head :)

On the bulkhead of my fj40. It was the highest place I could mount it.

I went for a waterproof one and tucked it under the headlight,

don't get to hung up over the location mate they are a sealed unit so stick it out of the way where ever you've got a spare hole and don't forget to wire a couple of buttons in the cab to control it :D

Oh yeah not totally worried about waterproofing side of things (It was on top of winch until last night) and survived just fine up till this point. Just want to move it up and out of the way under the bonnet so as to avoid tamper etc

Haha I already figured I'd need a shoehorn to fit it wherever I put it!
I did look at putting it there as it's ideal location being so close to battery but how did you go about securing it there as I couldn't find anything to bolt too.

When space is tight, try mounting all your big electrics on a sub member / removable panel. That way all the heavy cabling can stay connected and in place, while the mount is put back in to it's permanent position.
Check this out to see what I mean. Most of the heavy wiring doesn't get touched, once installed and the whole unit lifts in and out. All the cables required to remove the system are easy to reach Fit's into a gap only a 100mm or so wide. Battery isolators, over boost solenoids and winch solenoid.

From memory I modified the stock bracket for the solenoid to bolt through the top of the wheel arch and pressed the unit down onto it. I never had any issues with it being there but i did place some spiral tubing over a couple of cables to prevent chafing.
