Best place to buy synthetic winch rope?

Postby shaun.paddy » Mon Oct 03, 2016 11:34 am

Any one know of any deals on synthetic winch rope atm? Will be going on a swb safari with pto winch (toyota winch). Will most likely pick up 50m and what doesn't fit on drum will serve as extensions.

Cheers.

I'm also interested in this. I have heard tell that boating shops/ chandlers stock dyneema (or an unbranded equivalent) at a fraction of the cost from 4wd shops.
I know nylon rope works well in tow/snatching applications, but might bind up on a winch drum under load?
Let us know what you end up with.

I just bought some off Alixpress, $79 for 30m. As soon as there is a 4x4 label attached to it the p[rice triples. Yes they are also used in the marine industry and are priced differently.

Call Bridon Cookes

Yeah, and as mentioned above don't say the words "winch", "offroad" or "4wd" haha

if you want a reliable rope buy from an amsteel or similar dynema dealer/distributor, if you want the cheapest rope get one of those Chinese ones they make out of munched up recycled plastic bags :D

This is not why you would not use nylon rope for a winch rope.

Winch rope needs to have minimal stretch before it breaks, otherwise it can be very dangerous, which is one of the advantages of proper synthetic winch ropes over steel wire cable.

Be careful what you buy as not all are created equal.

Yeah im keen to keep away from Chinese rope, im definitely aware that you get what you pay for lol Had a look at 4wdbits website, hes got non name brand 10mm UHMWPE rope, min breaking load 10000kg for $7.99p/m. Seems a good price - Chinese?. Makes me wonder if its got any if the special coatings for increased wear resistance like some others have - and if its even worth the extra $5 p/m to buy a name brand i.e Dynamica. On another note will 10mm be a good diameter for a swb saf with pto?

Will look into bridons for a price too.

Cheers.

never tried that UHMWPE stuff but you can generally rest assured warren doesn't sell junk products at 4wdbits his products are good and he provides consistently good aftersales service if you do run into problems with a product, I've been through a lot of winchropes over the years and found the Chinese stuff has a short lifespan and falls apart pretty quick, the last 2 ropes I've brought have been 12mm and 11mm Amsteel and both have given good long service and both are still unbroken

Don't waste your money on cheap chinese rope, it's crap & won't last. First time you use it good, 2nd time maybe good after that no good. If your only doing the occasional winch stick to wire, last a lot longer than cheap rope just have to take the proper safety precautions. Otherwise spend the money & buy from 4wd bits, bridons, DM Standem, Hampidjan etc.

Get a mate to go in and get it, take it out of the package and then repackage it and send it..

10mm Dyneema is $6 per metre here at winch.co.nz

http://www.winch.co.nz/categories/runva-winch-rope/dyneema-winch-rope-10mm-by-the-meter.

Is this a reputable supplier and a good brand of rope?

I'd put that in the cheap chinese crap basket. Looks like the same stuff sold by Mudstuck. From experience I wouldn't bother.

^^^ yeah winch.co.nz sold more than their fair share of inferior ropes, probably sweet for the occasional user or townie poser but not good for much else :D :D

I called Bridons yesterday. 10mm Dynamica - the legit stuff not Chinese - was $14+gst pm... but if i buy a roll works out at $8.96+gst pm. Could be the go, shouldn't need to buy more for a while

Can the roll be divided up between people here? If it's genuine stuff.

100m roll. I'm keen on 50m for winch plus extentions etc but could part with the other 50m... I don't really need 100m lol. I'd imagine it's as genuine as it gets if brought through Bridons.
