2017 Mainland Winch Challenge

Postby Crawlerer79 » Sat Jan 14, 2017 1:50 pm

Googled everything but cannot find a more recent copy than the 2014 NZ Challenges Rules. Surely there's a rulebook or something for at least 2016 Mainland Winch Challenge, if not 2017. Where can I find it? Appreciate the help (hopefully I get some :P ) Cheers

Hi Crawler,

from my understanding they are getting re done due to too many inconsistency's from past rules and too many old rules that were not in a booklet or written form and was from the old days and a handshake type scenario .. Im guessing they will be ready in the next 2 months.. A lot was discussed at the agm and these just need to be implimented.. I can try to keep everyone on here posted as im the otago rep for our area.. Leigh may chime in also..

Are cages necessary in Clubman B? I thought they weren't but 2014 rules say they are.... did it change or am I wrong?

I think clubman B are going to put into same class as clubman as there was only 1 truck last year and to be fair.. having 35' s and driving the same line as clubman is a bit of an advantage.. so watch this space..

Interesting.... as long there's a class for 33s I'll be happy. For now I'll wait with the parts ordering tho that I can be sure that I can compete further down the road if I choose to, which to be honest is almost inevitable

Discussion ongoing I think, debating if Clubman should be non cage so beginners can have a crack, but then the courses need to be set very safe so no chance of rolls but its not really winch challenge then, more just a mudplug.

 Shows how new I am to looking at the challenge scene! Would love to get into it tho, just not yet. Right now I'm trying to put together a truck with I can choose to compete in later on in.... but that is a bit of a whoops isn't it haha

Yea, the only way I'll be competing in the near future would have to be w/o a cage. From there on it suddenly gets too expensive (from how I see it, again, I may be wrong). However I don't think it would be like a mudplug as those events generally you go as far as you can until you're stuck and then have a tractor haul you out. From what I've seen I like the idea of working to get your rig through a set course without relying on others as soon as you fluff up, rather get out the winch and other gear out and (try) get yourself out and through the rest of the stage. In my eyes a lack of a rollcage shouldn't stop it from being a 'Winch Challenge.' However I see that from a safety point of view etc. a cage is necessary for anything serious and without one the courses have to be far simpler, not going over anything which could roll a vehicle. Perhaps just a roll bar would be sufficient for clubman? I think it still requires certification for a internal bar (???) but I'd be certifying my truck anyways, but can see it being a potential issue for others starting (if I'm correct about the internal bar. Just going off what I think Tim L. told me :D ).

They are thinking of making a roll bar part of clubman but a simple hoop behind the driver and co that can be removed easily without too much cost may happen, personally i think it would be a good idea as it is there to save ya life in an event such as a roll over etc.. more will come out later on .. so yea.. will keep people informed when i know or someone else who knows know..lol

That's a bit of a generalisation right there - a 'entry level' winch challenge is exactly what is needed to keep interest in the sport. A winch challenge was held last year in Southland, a two day two night event which was very successful.

The courses (20) were set so if there was a roll it was only onto side. the stages were long to get some decent seat time and even old hand winch challenge drivers absolutely loved as it wasn't a vehicle wrecker so it can be done.

Edited to add, it would however be difficult to run an event like we did and an open class on the same day due to the totally different approaches

Yep, agree I was probably generalising a bit. Simple roll bar is probably a good compromise. Your event sounds just the ticket, entry level events to keep interest from new faces are important. Especially as you say - courses that aren't truck wreckers. No event has to be but in the heat of the moment its easy to get a bit silly.

Sure is, that's why you always set a course easier than you think, as soon as you add a stop watch a medium course becomes hard due to red mist!! We did have one vehicle roll onto its side through driver error but the only way that wouldn't have happened would be if he stayed in bed!!

What's the max. size tyre for clubman? I know that event tho everyone runs 35" in the higher classes tha max. is 36.5" (I think), so is the clubman class size 33" fullstop, or has it got a bit extra added? Because if it is 33" fullstop you can't event run a 32" Simex... they come in more like 33" and a bit. So you're kinda left with just Silverstones and GTRadial Komodos.

Is that measured size or sidewall size or manufacturers stated size ?? as all 3 will generally be different.

Uh okaayyyy, I was meaning the 36.5" for the higher classes like open and outlaw, cause there's a Hilux on the 36" triple block Simexes.... and because that's a bit more than the standard 35" I was just wondering if the standard 33" allowed for a bit more. Apparently not haha
