Hi, brought a house last year and it came with this welder thing, it looks like a welder/electric motor combo.
I don't know anything about it other then it's a welder cos it says it is. Almost seems like a stationary motor as well.
Can anyone shed some light on what it is and is it worth more then scrap value?
Under the little round cover on the back, down on the large bottom bit is an output or input shaft, has a key way in it.
Thanks for looking.
What is this thing? Welder/electric motor?
Re: What is this thing? Welder/electric motor?
No expert on welders, but my guess is an old three phase welder (wont run at most houses) with the ability to hook it to the auxiliary drive shaft of tractors or farm machines to generate its own power.
Alternatively maybe it uses the electric motor to generate its D.C. supply as the input to it would be A.C. , before the days of rectifiers.
It looks cool - I would not throw it out if it works, take it to any grey haired engineer they should be able to test it for you.

had to google that.
kinda interesting. electric motor driven DC arc welder.
looks like it takes a ton of power to run hence the magnetic starter.

Cheers guys, so your both saying the keyed shaft drive is an input to generate its own power for welding out in the field?
It's of no use to me and is super heavy so if someone likes it and wants to make an offer then feel free. Ya have to come pick it up tho.
Given how heavy it is id say there's a lot of copper in it which the scrap man in town loves, but seems too good for that. Looks like it's in good nick.

says A.C motor on the right hand side and it has normal single phase 240 volt output aswel
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

How long you willing to hold on to it ? Get it scrap valued and I'll equal it if you like. Might be down those ways soon for an exhaust
Re: What is this thing? Welder/electric motor?
Not a problem to hold on to it, getting it scrap valued will be a bit of challenge. I live outta town but if I remember I'll get a couple of mates to give me a hand, when they are round, to get it on the trailer and take it in.
