Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
1994 Surf ssr-x auto
Am having lots of problems with my 1kz motor and I'm now thinking of swapping it with a 5L diesel motor. Heard it is very dependable.
Has anyone done this before or can it be done?
Does the 5L motor fit in without modifications required?
Ideas please..

Considering your earlier posts re issues with manual pump on your 1KZ etc. perhaps put everything back to factory and get that sorted, a 5L is mechanical pump also and I see you having more issues and it costing more than just fixing what you have. A 1KZ is a good motor, you just need to look after it.
just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
5l conversion would require new engine mount modification not to mention the wiring Hassel of getting things to work from different signals ect. Also a 5l even with a turbo won't produce the same power as a properly setup 1kz. IMHO I too would stick with the 1kz cheaper and better in the long run. My 2c

You will be seriuosly disapointed with the 5L.
Get the 1kz sorted out

Thanks guys.
The thing is I got the head done recently because it was blowing air into the cooling system and bringing out lots of smoke at the rear. At first the smoke came out on start but would go after getting the motor worm or on high rpm. Eventually the smoke got worse to the point it was continuous and noticed that there was oil even dripping from the exhaust.
I took the head for pressure test, got it skimmed, reset the valves and every other service it could be done. I put it back on the motor, started it to see the problem is still there. Now I know the head is fine so it must be the block?
NOTE: I noticed the number 2 piston had oil on it but had also put new pistons and rings (a mechanic had done that job for me).
How is this oil getting into that cylinder?
So that's where my frustration is. I don't know where to start and am scared that if I take the block for tests I might be told that it is cracked.
What else can cause a motor to blow air into the cooling system and sucking in oil into the cylinder?
It is not mixing coolant with oil.
I really love this car but she's now becoming too demanding.
So I should stick with the KZ motor..........

Turbo oil seals could be stuffed if they are that would cause the smoke and oil dripping.
Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
2nd stuffed turbo, wouldn't oil in cylinders just get burned, oil perhaps getting past the turbo seal straight into the exhaust?
Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
turbo stuffed or blocked breather.
Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
Take it to a decent mechanic , just pluckng ideas off the Internet from people that haven't looked at it first hand is a waste of time. What did the mechanic who did the head say ??
Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
the most economic option is to get rid of the thing and buy another truck mate if you cant sort it out yourself you'll end up spending more on mechanics and repairs or swapping the engine out to a 5l than what the things worth and be left with a twice as big hole in your pocket , everyone loves and raves about the performance of 1kz motors but they are a known unreliable flop from Toyota

I would disagree, a smoking diesel not running right is not going to be worth much at all so very uneconomical to just ditch it.
Take it to a "good" diesel mechanic for a diagnosis. Ask around on here for a recommended diesel mech.
From there you can decide if you can fix yourself or get a quote to get fixed. Plenty of help on here mate if you want to give it a go.
The amount you would spend on buying-rebuilding-fitting-certing a 5L will be far more than a decent rebuild on the KZ. They are very good motors and with a few basic mods and good maintenance you will get good life out of it.

Thanks guys for this insight on the KZ motor. It does have power and makes your adrenalin rise on take offs.
So my last mechanic is a crook. I paid this guy over US$3000 to rebuild this KZ motor but still had problems.
I'll take it to my local genuine Toyota dealer for a diagnostic. They might charge an arm and a leg but it will be worth it.

You would be better off taking it to a diesel specialist
O.e. shops are fine for general maintanence etc. But you need experiecne here to direct on whether you need to start again or what the next step is

Re: Hilux Surf Engine swap. 1kz to 5L motor?
I decided to keep the KZ motor.
In the past three weeks I was removing and striping the engine part by part.
I found out my last mechanic was a crock or he just doesn't know what he is doing.
I found 2 problems as I stripped the engine.
1. The heavy smock must have been coming from the turbo charger. on its outlet was heavy oil dripping. I took it to turbo specialist and all the inside bearings and other parts were worn out.
2. The number 2 cylinder sleeve was not fitted properly hence the blowing of air into the cooling system.
So the block has been re-sleeved and serviced. The turbo charger has been fitted with a new shaft, bearing and impellers.
This weekend I will start putting everything back together.
I'm excited with this project and will update the results when I finish.
