2.4 toyota diesel differences

Postby skid » Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:10 pm

righto then

we have a 2.4 diesel here that we are trying to sell

had a couple of questions we couldn't answer

have searched other forums and a tech website, but not get any joy

what I want to know is the difference between a 2L , 2LT , 2LTE

more importantly, I'm trying to find out what particular model surfs they came in

cheers

http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/

There are 2 styles of 2L series engines : the early ones with the offset cam and rockers up till 1989 and the late style with the direct valve activation from 90 on. The electronic only came on the later stule.
Most of the time the later ones are refered to as 2L2 or 2LT2 or 2LTE.
The early style have a cast aluminim top cover with 3 big nuts in the middle, and a round section pipe crossover tube

2L non turbo 2.4
2LT 2.4 turbo, 2 different models, early model has roller rocker head, later model has shims/bucket adjusters, both models have different exhaust manifolds, as well as a few other minor differences
2LT-E second gen 2.4 turbo with electronic injection

cheers dude

main reason for asking is coz we wrecked an LN130 and the 2L came out of it

but upon trying to sell it as a motor out of a LN130, a couple of buyers have queried it as not being the factory motor

so we just trying to dig up some history

anyone know of a website we can find out engine number codes etc etc etc :?: :?:

Hi Skid

the 1989 LN 130 had the 2LT motor
From 1990 the LN130 had the 2LTE motor

If you lok up ToyoDIY.com it will tell you everything about toyota .Even your VX

Cheers Richard

Loving the comments on the auction telling you it is a 2LTE..
To be a 2LTE it would need a turbo. (Hence the T)
But yeah, I think the 2L replaced the L around 82-83 so LN51- LN60, LN65 Hilux or the first of the solid axle Surfs (LN60) came with the 2L.

yeah, just read that

ya think we'd know if there was a bloody turbo bolted to the side of the motor

some people are real clever though, so we'll just let that fulla think its got a hairdryer on it

Hi Skid

You don't need the VIN to identify a motor to a particular model

Look at "Parts reference" -"select model" then skip VIN and go to "Japan" which bring up "Year" And then select model and an older Surf will be under Hilux.

Hopes this helps

are you sure its not a 3L. ln130's also came out with 3L (2.8) motor.

Old thread I know but just after a bit of info.
I just bought a LN60 beam axle surf, with a 2L-T, thought it would be a repowered 2L one but body tags clearly show it's original, anyone else come across a factory one of these?

My first surf was a factory 2lt. Some of the very early beam axle surfs (mid '84 and some of '85) had the 2l though.

If anyones still out there on this post...
Just got an 88 japanese ln65 with wat looks like 2l 1 motor. Re the 2l 1 & 2l 2 motors Id like to know if there r any similarities or transferrable bits or setups between each other and or the 3l & 5l motors . Have a few minor 3l bits already but know of some 2l 1 and a 3l partial motor lots for sale. Knowing wat bits swap will help decide whether or not its worth buyn them or not c.

All along been lookn to build up a 3l for a spare for my 3l powered ln106 whichl now get a birthday and its factory diff lock setup fixed n then sold.
So if a 3l was similar enuf in bellhousing & other mounts....push onward & rig a 3l up n drop it in the old ln65 perhaps?...Selling the good 2l 1 to get a few $ back? Ditch all 3l and just stick with 2l's?
Only reason I keep thinkn on 3l & 5l is the power lack. I find myself towing grossly overloaded loads 1ce or 2ce a year as it is with the 3l running an r150f box cos i killed the car duty g52 box so the 2.4 could be the straw that breaks my hiluxes back for towing ability. Failing those it'd be 1kz, 13bt...1uz....302w.... but then id be lookn seriosly at diff ladder bars ....sheesh... I think u get the picture.

Any help much appreciated - thanks

very little interchangeable with the 2l-1 and anything else (maybe the 1l).
between the 2lt-2, 2lte 3l, 5l most things are interchangeable.

no. 2l-1 and 2l-2 are different. the -1 or -2 is which version of the engine. version 2 is the later engine.

a 2lt-1 is a 2l-1 with a turbo. neither have much in common with a 2l-2, 2lt-2, 2lte,3l or 5l.

Cool now we're getting places.
I realise 2l 2's the nxt 1 buuut....does that mean that 2l 2 shares bits with 3L & friends? Great info when bits hoarding. Saves buying bits that r no use having.

Having some issues with my 2.4, the pump was leaking so had a new seal installed but in error the little arm inside the pump got bent or broken, the garage has sourced a 2nd hand pump and put it on, but have had many issues in getting it to start and run as it did previously they think it could be injectors or bleeding the air out of the lines (or similar). Reading this tread has got me thinking about subtle differences that might occur like teeth count on the pulley, or marking on the pulley to line up timing etc, Is there any differences or any ideas from the 2.4 gurus in this thread?

TIA
