Hi
I have a 2003 Ford Courier 2wd ute which has started to cough and splutter when starting from cold first thing in the morning.
It fires up straight away but coughs and black smoke comes out of the exhaust and then comes right.
After the initial coughing fit it runs perfectly and also starts fine for the rest of the day.
Have heard that a bad batch of diesel can cause this.
Any thoughts??

Re: Diesel coughs when cold starting
My Toyota did that ...
Pulled the Glow plugs and tested them
2 good 1 not so good 1 no glow at all
Fitted new ones and no more coughing
So yeah that's what I'd check first

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Re: Diesel coughs when cold starting
Ford-Mazda WL engines eat glow plugs!! Problem is the timer stays on for a long time, controled by water temp, you can check this by using a volt meter on the live rail, it will go for 5 min or longer, poor little glow plugs dont like it!! There are Heavy service plugs now available for these engines that last longer.

Cheers everyone for the answers. I'm sure that we changed all of them last winter and we put some decent ones in at the time.
Looks like might be time to do them again and as John says perhaps some bigger and better ones.

Thought I would give you a bit of an update.
Turned out one of the plugs was dead.
Decided to replace all four with some big bad buggers (cheers John for the part numbers) and fires up perfectly now.

Re: Diesel coughs when cold starting
No worries. Another way around it is to fit aftermarket glow timer, think they're about $100 or there abouts, easy to fit with adjustable glow time and after glow function.Have done a few. A cheaper alternative in long run and easy on glow plugs.

Re: Diesel coughs when cold starting
Hi all. Dear old girl (2004 Mazda Bounty 2.5 TD, 160,000km) coughing and spluttering when first started for the day, but runs like a clock when warm, so pretty sure the glow plugs will need to be replaced. Can someone please provide me with some part numbers for Heavy Duty glow plugs for this truck and the best place to get them? SirGerald, what did you replace your with, have they worked out well? I am down in Gore so I guess will need to get them sent from somewhere. Thanks
Re: Diesel coughs when cold starting
We didn't end up adding the timer. From memory we put in the top quality plugs and they seemed to last fine. I honestly can't remember if we got these from Repco or BNT??
