How hard is it to increase the boost on a terrano?

Easiest, is to drill a tiny hole (1.5-2mm) in the rubber tube from
the compressor to the waste gate actuator. The relief valve on the manifold blow off at about 14psi, so look for signs of oil here to let you know when you are up to that pressure.

This is the first step to do without mucking round with the fuel.

put a boost gauge in first. get a boost tap and put it in the hose that goes from turb to waste gate actuator. wind the screw out til you get the boost wer you want it.take for a drive everytime you adjust it. dont go drilling holes in rubber hoses thats rangi as and if your underwater you'll get water wer you dont want it

Could be it was stuffed and nearing the end of its life (fuze has just about run out...) although I thought that usually these things go better just before they implode.

To gain horsepower, increasing boost (eg. more air) is only part of it. Once you have increased boost, as cheap insurance on motor, install an EGT guage (google "moonlight racing" and check out 60mm guages), then you can tweak fuel up. The more fuel, the more horspower and the higher the exhaust gas temperature, so there is a balance. I try to keep temp. below 850 degrees C, but do push 900 now and then. Others may know better about max recomended temps. If your going to do this, maybe fit guage while everything standard, and see what temps it runs. I bet when you increase boost only, your EGT will drop, maybe only slightly. Check out racing trucks, Big Macs etc, Black smoke (eg. fuel = horsepower) I'd like to know there EGT. I'm running 15psi boost and removed that "over pressure' valve and bunged hole. Its worth it, have fun.

No-one yet has yet said what boost the terrano runs, ??? I am suspecting around 6-7 lbs boost, My old terrano was boosted and I was told 10lbs but I'm still not sure, All I know is my mate had a 1996 terrano and mine was 1990 both auto and I could drive around him with ease.

Mine is factory set at 10Lbs, so I am told by DSL when it was last serviced.

I have just fitted a boost gauge to my truck and can confirm it sits on 10psi.
I also have fitted an EGT gauge but will get someone in the know to fit the sensor. I do not have the tools to drill and tap.

On my TD27 I drilled and tapped straight thru the threaded bolt hole/lug for the heat shield on the exhaust manifold, the one that happens to be inline with centre of outlet/turbo flange. My sensor only needed a 1/8 bsp thread thou.

You could just get it fitted on the dump pipe side (post turbo -not as accurate but it works - just got to allow for the temp drop).

An exhaust shop should be able to drill and then fizz a nut onto the exhaust pipe which the fitting will screw into for bugger all.

I know its not the best way but its cheap, quick and gives you some indications while you save / prepare for a pre turbo exhaust manifold mount.

I just fitted a pyro gauage (EGT).

Have now fitted 2.5 inch exhaust all the way from the turbo.
Boost went from 18psi with no wastegate, to 22psi with no wastegate hooked up.....sounds awesome



This is what I used for the flexi section, (tube in a tube)



Intercooler with fan under it,


Then i will drop boost down to 18psi again.

Can I ask where you plumed your pyro gauge in? I am thinking of placing mine at the end of the dump pipe as I cannot be buggered trying to unbolt the dump pipe from the turbo.

Remember, I said that I removed all the emission control gear, I also removed the pipe that directs exhaust behind the head to the intake manifold. To blank these flanges, I made an alloy plate for intake and a steel one for the exhaust. The exhaust plate i removed and drilled and tapped (1/4 npt). Screwed in thermocouple, wired up all done.
In the pics, you can see the braided wire appearing from under the manifold. The sensor sits between No3 cylinder and the turbo, so is the best place for the most accurate readings.

dont Lie, we have seen 24psi, kinda hard to tell on the vids but its true. Does indeed sound good.

Finished intercooler project.
Fitted all the parts today. I reakon it would take about 20 minutes to swap between intercooled or not
The fan fit perfect, you can see that it clears the engine and the intercooler (no chaffing ) You can feel the air being sucked in from 2 inchs in front of the scoop with the fan on .
Shopping list was;

Bonnet scoop and bellows $80
97 on Mistral intercooler $120
Supercheap 10inch fan $95
6mm and 10mm threaded rod $lying round
Hand fulls of nuts/washers $in boxes lying round

Equals a farkin cheap conversion

No, think about it, same had to be done with my fan, you reverse the polarity of the motor to get the motor to spin the right direction for pulling and not pushing, then you need to flip the blades to make them work in that direction too.
It's all explained on the instructions in the box.
