Muffler options for TD27T 2.5"

Postby fullthrottle » Sun Aug 03, 2014 8:21 pm

Hi All

I'm in the process of rebuilding my exhaust for the TD27T. Built a custom dump pipe from the turbo into a 2.5" exhaust.

I just want to take the harshness out of the sound and keep the WOF man happy, but also have no flow restrictions.

A few options I've found so far...

Has anyone had any experience with these and/or can recommend a good muffler option?

I have one of these personally, smooths out the roughness but still gives you body & flow

Straight pipe not much louder really. Is on a toyota for some reason but wof guys have no issues with them on turbo diesel nissans

chuck anything thats straight through on it. the turbo takes most of the noise out anyway.
don't bother with a flow master, their design doesn't work with turbo engine (according to flowmaster site, they have straight through mufflers for turbo engines).

X2 for the Coby (or similar) I personally think the Flow master is a lot quieter, probably half as loud as a straight pipe.

Edit:
This is what the $80something Coby sounds like

I just had a 3" incl dump put on my surf 1kz-te and used the scavenging type (1st link) resonator. Good sound and excellent flow. No noise issues at wof and good results on dyno too ;-)

Yeah I didnt really consider that about the flowmaster, seems to be fine for my 100hp forklift diesel doing 11psi anyway.

Its definately a lot quieter and not obnoxious sounding, but has a good bark when you 'get on' the fuel pedal.

I think the snorkel/intercooler/dump size/length of exhaust system makes a big difference to the overall sound/character of the thing too.

Every diesel likes to take a good dump

Cheers everyone for the replies. I've got 5.5m of 2.5" pipe to play with, so I'll do a straight pipe first and then bung a muffler in after if the sound is a bit much.

By the way, if you ever need a flange cut for the garrett turbo (kidney shaped) exhaust outlet, then these guys now have the pattern on file and can cut you one in about 5mins.

I just run the 457mm one of these http://www.chase.co.nz/category/105/Louvred-Centre-Tube on mine now, tho it is a little tractor sounding at lower rpm.
If ya want something a little quieter, I ran one of these http://www.chase.co.nz/part/582/0/RD41266 for ages, seem to handle the diesel vibrations no worries, and did sound a lot better than the hot dog does.

screw the mufflers, TD27-t's are quite enough(just) for a WOF with striaght pipe.

it's the hilux engines they WOF guys complain about.

Surprisingly true.
I did go with the straight through 2.5inch in the end. Sounds fine to me and Mr WOF.
I also had to rebuild the little 1.4 Astra exhaust and those things are bloody obnoxious in comparison.
