Opinions on Head Gasket brands

Postby NB42 » Mon Oct 06, 2014 12:05 am

I've been offered a good deal on a head gasket and head set etc from kiwi cylinder heads and was wondering if anyone has ever used their head gaskets and their opinions etc.? The gasket is steel and will be used with a factory head that has been machined/checked by a machine shop.

Hi ,all I can say is that kiwi supplied a new complete head and gaskets for my 6 cylinder diesel cruiser and both gaskets failed straight away ,went to factory gaskets and total success. Seems people in the know say factory gaskets are the go for diesels . Certainly worked in my case. Work carried out buy top mechanic. The garage has always used kiwi gaskets.

Go genuine if you can afford it, Toyota will usually give you a good price if you push them ... go and see them in person (they have fixed pricing on some items anyway)

Have been told you need to get the right gasket as well as there are sometimes slight differences in them which can cause issues if not the right one

Cheers. I'm aiming to not spend too much as this is for a bush truck that will be a-framed everywhere, hence looking at their gaskets for such a good deal. Also should mention it is the 4jg2 isuzu mu

If you had said 4Jb1 i would have said go with kiwi cylnderhead supplies no issue, but the 3.1 is known to have issues so factory should be the go.

^^^^^^^^^^^ This

A genuine gasket is still cheaper than doing the job twice...

I would personally go for genuine ones not aftermarket.

You can also use a sealer like Hylomar if you have repeated failures and everything is straight.

It used to be part of the factory procedure for Perkins Diesels when I did my apprenticeship.

I got a Kiwihead cylinder head with the valves from my old head machined and fitted to my ford courier (2.5td)
Also came with new gasket and headbolts. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
It only cost me 600 bux for the bare head too
