1HDT Big End Bearing Shell Replacement

Postby fullthrottle » Wed Jan 28, 2015 10:15 pm

Hi All

I'm preparing to replace the BEBs on my 1HDT that's done 308k's. Just had a few queries.....
Is there a special number matching system that needs to be noted when ordering the BEBs for your specific engine and stamped info on the shells to identify their positions? This part isn't quite clear.

Cheers

Hi,
My understanding is that Toyota have different "grades" of a particular size to allow for slight variations in the journal size.

When I did both of mine I just got a standard set of shells from BNT (much much cheaper than Toyota) and they have been fine, did a plastigauge clearance check and they were all good.

Some people also suggest you should also change the BE bolts when you do the bearing change, some do and some don't, I didn't for both of mine the first time around, but I will do the next time i do them.

If you want to do bolts I have got some that I got from Japan so are a bit cheaper than local

Cheers
Tim

I have a set of bearings on my shelf that I can sell you. I have sold my 80 series so no longer need them. Pm if interested.

Cheers for the info and offers guys.

I think I've found what I was looking for. The below information mentions to match the bearing numbers against the crank shaft and connecting rod numbers.
Do the bearing kits all have numbered bearings?

what I did fopr a mate was we took a bearing shell out and it had .050 on it.. and we had std on them..so ordered more of the same that came out.. might be what you need to do..which means more time off the road..

Cheers for the advice and parts guys. Any idea on how long the ACL bearing shells should last? Change again after another 300,000km or every 100,000km ?

It's all done and is a bit quieter. Was fairly straight forward, just bloody messy lying under the truck getting them all in.

I spoke to an engine rebuilder and he said that when the 1hdt's were built they had inferior bearing shells installed into some engines.. with that being said, he also said that once replaced.. they should last the engine due to being the appropriate superior bearing material( hope that made sense) but what I got from that was, oil change regularly and it'll last the engine..!! Im still a bit unsure but I can understand the process.. so I'm guessing that you should speak to a engine builder/ reconditioner to make sure..

So it's been a couple of weeks now and you know when you do some major work you are always listening for those strange sounds.

Now I have noticed, after the engine warms up a little the a very faint random ticking sound appears from the bottom end. It doesn't tick all the time, just very randomly. Sometimes 1 tick, then a few seconds later another couple of ticks, then nothing for a while, then another tick etc.

It could have always been there and now I'm just paranoid. Doesn't get any worse after the engine has been running for a couple of hours.

Is this something anyone else noticed and it just disappeared after running in a bit more?

All the new hiluxs do it, my td42 did it, and the 1HDT in my 80 series did it.

Your motor sounds perfectly normal :D

So when they stop ticking you should run and wait for the "BOOM" before returning?
