Td42t turbo upgrade

Postby BEAUTGQ » Wed Feb 11, 2015 7:48 pm

Hi guys. Haven't been on here for awhile but I have a new truck and the quest for more power is on.

So after spending a fair bit of time reading on patrol4x4 forum the answer would be a td05 18 g or 20 g. I was all keen on a UFI td05 18g until I got the price for one from them back. Coming in at 2.5k aus made me think twice.

So I have been looking at other options.

The two most promising are.

A td05 18g custom built here in NZ by a guy down in the lower NI. Using a Taiwanese (kanal/kinugawa) exhaust housing so I can have the t3 flange but all other pars genuine MHI Apart from the heavy duty thrust bearing from a UK company.

Or

A Holset turbo from MSE MOTORSPORT (Steve Murch). A HRC35S of the shelf or a custom turbo using the exhaust housing from the HT18 turbo already on the truck with the hrc35S core. $1550 and $1000 Respectively.

I'm looking for better performance than a cheap turbo, but also would like to hear from anyone that has one of these turbos mentioned, here in NZ.

A couple of winch challenge guys are running the holsets apparently with good results. But I'm not after 35+psi. I'm planning on 20-25psi at this stage until the bug bites again.

The engine is a blacktop factory turbo fully rebuilt about 40k ago. I have a w2a intercooler setup I have put together using the more expensive core off trademe (redline) a hi ace aux radiator and 15l per min pump. Yet to be fitted as I plan to do all in one hit.

Already using a custom SS air box I built 4inch in 4inch out. And plan to upgrade the pump to 12mm once I have the rest fitted. And will obviously have 3inch straight through exhaust.

So she should go good. Hopefully someone has experience with one of the MSE turbs

Thanks

there is a patrol rocking around with twin GTR turbo's on it some where in the lower north island.

see plenty of those on trademe, wouldn't have the lag then either,

I would say do the pump before the Turbo, and disconnect the waste gate off your current Turbo once the new pump has been fitted.

Most people are lucky to crack the 15psi mark on the standard pump. Its usually lack of fuel thats the real issues when hunting for more power with those motors :D :D :D :D

The pumps on these turbo GUs are standard 11mm plungers and according to the main guy in Aus is good for 170hp. Which is far more than the factory turbo is good for. Anything over 14 psi the heat generated out weighs the gains from more boost. The turbo definitely has to be done before the pump otherwise I'll melt the Pistons straight away.

Even on my GQ running a td05 small 16g off a wrx I was getting 20 psi on a stock 10m pump with the fuel wound up. That went well but this time I'm after more hence looking at other options.

Try 30psi plus all day long on a stock non turbo pump on a stock engine with no heat or lag, still don't know why there are not more compound turbo set ups showing up on these patrols, my one is still getting the crap caned out of it, highly recommend doing this , plus it looks cool and confused looks are gold

Digging up this old thread i came across.
Hows the turbo 18G been going since you got it a few years ago mate?
Im looking at upgrading myself
Have the 12mm pump, front mount cooler and 3" exhaust already.

Holset from Trundles or from Turbo Care?
