TD27t runs rough and smoke on start-up

Postby ryalls » Sun Jan 03, 2016 10:28 pm

Hi all,

I have bought a 1994 mistral that with the TD27t engine in it.
When I start it from cold it runs really rough and is blowing a lot of white smoke (Unburnt diesel) and is missing really badly on at least one cylinder if not more, once the engine warms up it runs sweet, no missing and no smoke.

- I have done a compression test and although not perfect i'm OK with the results giving the age of the engine. I also do not think compression is the cause of the rough idle and smoke when cold.

- I have removed the small gauze filter in the injector pump and although I got a ton more power the cold idle issue still remains.

- I have tested (measured resistance and did a glow test) all glow plugs and i'm happy the the results.

My question is where do i focus my attention now for this cold start issue?
Has any successfully diagnosed and repaired this issue previously?

Injector pump? injectors?
Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Dan

Glow plugs or glow plug relay.. Ye I know you said you checked them. But they should stay on for a bit. Just at half voltage even after the engine has started.

I have exactly the same issues with mine mate and my injector pump is leaking. So maybe have a poke around there.

Sounds like glow plugs (or maybe just one of them) to me...

check the turbo is not leaking oil. could be getting a pool of engine oil in the intake after shutdown, which gets sucked in on start up.

I think you're onto something Crash Bandicoot.

Looks like I have no after glow on the glow plugs.
As soon a i hook a wire from battery positive to glow plug rail it runs perfectly.

Does anyone know how to diagnose this system?
Looks Like I have a timer/controller box, 2 large relays by the battery, a dropping resistor in the inlet manifold and a single wire connecting to the glow plug rail.

Any guidance here would be great.

Cheers
Dan

Been there, done that mate.

And am an expert on that stupid after glow system.

you want to spend nothing now and a bit later or a bit now and nothing ever again?

and how handy are you with wires/wiring?

I should also add, it didnt fix my problem, turned out I was getting air inside the injector pump.

OK thanks for your post.
how was the air getting in?
I've done a little research on the after glow system and it looks like it stays on at a reduced voltage on mine it's around 4-5V.
I't seems to work sometimes and not others even when the engine is completely cold, however even when it does work it still misses badly and smokes until it warms up.

I believe that i'm not getting complete combustion and have come up with 3 things to check but i'd love some advice:
1-glow system.
2-injectors not atomizing fuel and making it more difficult to burn completely when cold.
3-injector pump - i know bugger all about these so any advice would be great about overhauling them.

I'd love to get this solved so the world knows how to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance

If the pumps been touched it could be timing? or a stuck delivery valve draining back quite easily also
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

if it is the pump would it make sense it's only doing it when cold?
it does seem down on power a little so the pump could be a possibility.

Problem still exisits, here's where I am at.

I have replaced the glow plug timer and confirmed there is voltage before and after start up to the glow plugs. it gets full battery voltage at glow plugs before start and around 4 volts after start up, is anyone able to tell me if 4 volts is enough? because as soon as I put 12 volts across the glow plugs after start up it runs perfectly. Or is this just masking another issue?
Please Note:
Compression's are all acceptable and glow plugs are all within spec resistance values and all glow nicely.

Possible next steps:
Try to increase after glow voltage by a couple of volts
Get injectors and injector pump serviced. (is this just replacing seals? does anyone know what is done during an injector pump refurb?)

What do you experts think?

mine still stood at 12 volts after starting but the glow plug timer would turn them off then bak on again for a 10 second period after starting.

If your problem persists I still have the aftermarket glow plug controller from my mistral in the shed if you think it will help.

If you have inector pump issues it would have an effect over the entire RPM range not just on start up

and since we now know through your testing that when provided with extra voltage after start up it runs fine, we have ruled out fueling.

Go aftermarket glow plug controller . 250 for a good one 100ish for a basic one
