Been doong lots of research on the RE4R03A automatic tranmission.
But.... It seems they need an ECU to operate.
Are all the RE4R03A trans electronically controlled or are the earlier ones out of the 300zx or safaris/ patrols manually operated.
What will haappen if i fit a electronically operated RE4R03A behind my engine with no ecu.
Will it still change gears ok or will it have gears missing or chage at funny times ?

I had to hotwire my y60 due to losing keys...it had no first gear or over drive,so id assume if you run it with no ecu you would have the same problem?

best bet would be to use a electronically controlled auto. either fit the ecu or manualise it.
that way you can fit the shifter where ever you like.
as they are JATCO gearboxes it likely you can get a 2wd version or the rear of the 2wd version. quite possibly in another brand (eg toyota, mitsi etc) as they all use JATCO boxes.
not sure what you will do for the heater/aircon.

I know toyota tend to use aisin not jatco.in the heavier duty trucks anyway

Yeah toyota part owns Aisin AW so I think all their Trans are made by them. Many other manufacturers use also Aisin transmissions.

sorry i may have names mixed up a bit but point is there is quite a bit of use of the same/similar gearboxes by the car companies.

Body swap onto a ute chassis done. Dummy engine in place.

Fitted bigger vented discs and callipers off a V6 Navara (same size as standard Terrano)
Going home now.
