Turbo replacement / upgrade on TD27T

Postby danielbeek » Tue Jun 12, 2018 7:48 am

Hey all,
hoping for a bit of advise, as the current standard Hitachi H12 is on it's last legs after 315k of service. It's only hitting 5.5 psi, last week still doing 10 psi... Also passes oil.
I've got a second turbo in similar condition, with play but so far no sign of damage, so the plan was to chuck in a $145 bearing and seal kit.

However I've seen this: https://www.scarles.co.nz/collections/t ... et-diesels
Compressor Wheel: 60x44.6
• Compressor Housing A/R .42
• Turbine Housing: A/R .86
• Turbine Wheel: 53x46.23
• Internal Wastegate: 14psi

I don't know what the specs are on the factory HT12, what do you with turbo replacement experience think of the above - look ok for a TD27T (in a Terrano)? I wont be chasing massive gains, but would like a little extra poke, and will be adding a little intercooler.

Thanks Crash,
Yesterday I picked up a Mistral turbo (a Garrett), but now I suspect its a pre-facelist (topmount IC) one, which I guess is different on the outlet? It's compressor outlet is positioned exactly the same as my Hitachi HT12. Maybe its a TB2557?

The wrecker also had one from an R50 Terrano with TD27ETI. It's outlet faced totally different way, I guess for the FMIC. Do you know - is it the exact same turbo as the >97 Mistral, and can I simply rotate the housing? Would it be a GT1544, or maybe GT2052S?

The R50's are front mount inter cooled, the R20's compressor housing faces straight up as it goes directly into the top mounted intercooler under the bonnet via way of a 65mm diameter 50mm long rubber joiner then the same on the other side where it departs the intercooler down into the inlet manifold
