Postby pouw » Thu Jun 13, 2013 9:21 pm

Excuse the dumb question but I want to top up my engine oil - anyone know what type of oil I should put in it i.e 30/40 etc?

Cheers

Hi pouw (sorry my old memory has forgotten your name), I still remember your help when I asked about ipad v laptop and your advice has turned out to be very satisfactory ---- thanks. Now back to your question that I will try to answer as none or the Mitsy gurus have jumped on. If you are topping up I would go for a good quality 30/40 as you are topping up unknown viscosity that is reaching it's change me kilometers. The Mitsy V6 is known for burning oil when the K's get high through valve stem seals and worn oil rings but don't stress they will keep going. If motor is still in good condition and not burning oil and your mild north island climate for an oil change I would say , 20w/40 , if blowing blue maybe a 30/50 or some higher viscosity will help.

ANY OIL IS BETTER THAN NO OIL,

FITZY.

Yep. If she burns a bit then run 20w50.
I wouldnt run anything thicker. The hydraulic lifters wont like it!
15w40 is spec but they're all getting fairly long in the tooth and seem ti drink less if filled with 20w50.
