twin turboing a V6

Postby mudsurfv6 » Tue Apr 28, 2015 7:19 pm

on a V6 ( or V8) to turbo it you would need a turbo on each side, right? problem with turbos are the lag, so the answer is twin turbo. ( big and small). right?
question is can you put a big turbo on one side and a small on the other? or would you have to quad turbo it? big and small on each side?
how would best option above ( + intercooler) compare to TRD supercharger? and $. 5VZFE. auto.

Its simple enough to run one turbo either one side with pipe around from other side, or centrally with pipes from both manifolds. Good luck mixing a big and a small turbo as twins. Very hard to keep a smooth torque curve. (hint, search Subaru valley of death). Lag is almost non-existant nowadays. Boost threshold can be a problem if you chose a large turbo, but can be minimised if you need a large turbo. Better to get one suited to what you require, and what you are wanting is the biggest factor of what to choose.

single turbo V engine gets a boot load of lag due to the exhaust cooling down (expansion) on the long exhaust pipe from one side to the other.
there is single turbo V engines (typically diesel) where the exhaust is on the other side of the head and turbo is mounted in the V of the engine.

one turbo per bank ie one each side is much the norm.
dual turbo (as in one big and one small) your looking at sequential, which is difficult to get right, or compound which is only really needed if your chasing 40psi plus. on a V engine thats per bank so it would be quad turbo.

just been throwing ideas around with a mate. be a while away before I get onto engine mods, too much other stuff to do first. but I'm always thinking about different ways of doing things and making a plan in my head, no doubt will change over time.

money is the biggest factor. not exactly sure what I'm wanting/needing yet. just good to know what can and can't be done. trying to compare against supercharger.

Thought about throwing the 3.4 out and chucking in a 4.0 v6 out of a mid 2000s prado.
250hp and 380f/pd of toque. Just about 1/2 again inprovement from what youve got and it would fit in quite nicely

haven't thought about it. done a few engine swaps and don't feel like doing another. worth thinking about though, is the mid 2000s prado front drive shaft on the left or right?

been told twin turbo option would be cheapest but probably not as good an option as sc.

how hard would it be to take the lower half of the (valley cover) of the toyota v6 and mate the top half (runners) and eaton supercharger from a vy series II calias and run a 1 & 3/4 inch pulley.

just thinking outlay versus return.

just asking as that TRD one above looks suspiciously similar to the eaton that was on my VY.
