Fibbing tyre manufacturers....

Postby Mud Camper » Thu Jun 05, 2014 7:17 pm

I'm trying to find the right 4x4 tyre for my beam axle hilux camper.

In doing so I've discovered the Maxxis 33s on the wagon are really only 31 inches talk. The Bridgestone 31s on my daily ute actually measure 29.

Checks on both tyre manufacturers websites claim the tyre diameter is bigger than they are.

Maxxis claims 818mm - actually 790. Bridgestone claim 781mm - actually 740. Perhaps my tape has stretched? Yeah right.

For gearing I need a tyre that really is 790mm in diameter, or a bit bigger, but is skinnier than the 12.5 wide tyres I have.

Goodrich, Maxxis ant Toyo all do a 255 85 r16 which sounds like the right size, (I haven't been able to measure one) but are about $480 each!

So - does anyone know a reasonably priced skinny tyre that actually measures 31 inches/ 790mm (not just claimed size). I can use 15 or 16 inch rims, 8 inches wide or less.

Appreciate any suggestions.

That's plenty skinny! Cheers for that - will ask him to measure diameter.

Those skinny tyres and rims are off late model Land Cruiser and only 5 stud, might (will) have trouble fitting them to the Hi-Lux :( :( .

JUST A THOUGHT,

FITZY.

Very good point Fitzy...... Imagine I'll be able to find some rims to do the job if the tyres measure up.

Either that, or a real big hammer to get them on my 6 stud hubs!

For the benefits you get with good performance on and off road then the $480 is not a bad price.

As they say you only get what you pay for.

And these, although auction has closed could request a fixed price offer?

Thats a funny 33x10.5! I have 33 x 10.5 and a 255/85 spare, they are pretty dam close. the worn-2/3rds half worn 255 measures the same as the new 33, just what the BFG site says.

Dunno bout you guys, but to do a proper tyre size comparison like the one in the photo, both tyres need to be off the vehicle.

The tyre on the left is clearly still on the vehicle, so in no way is that an accurate representation of that tyre compared to the tyre on the right.

Yes you guys are correct, thinking about this

I just copied and pasted the photo from this interesting article, where they went from 33x10.5 to 255/85 KMs on a Toyota

255 x85x16 is the metric equivalent of 825x16.
They are one and the same.

Oh I'm confused! I thought the 255 part of 255x85 16 meant 255mm wide. That's just over 10 inches, with the sidewall being 85% of 255 - ie 217mm - just over 8.5 inches.

With imperial measures I understood the 8.25 part of 8.25 r16 means 8.25 inches wide - and an 8.25 inch side wall.

So the 255 85 r16 should be nearly 2 inches wider, and a little taller than the 8.25r16.

I think.

My head hurts!

In theory the side wall is expressed as a percentage of the tyres width so the wall of a 255 85 R16 would be 85 % of 255 or 216 mm/8.6 inches

Thanks Zukmeista - I've been watching that auction. They look pretty good. The perishing you mention - likely to cause WOF issues?

I doubt it, these are the best set I have had so far. It is very minor and wasn't mentioned on wof sheet, so don't see it being a problem. Just thought I would mention it in auction so there are no suprises.

I find they still work well even compared to modern tyres like simexes, they are just about unbeatable on the slick yellow clay we have up in Northland. I'd keep them but wanted something a bit bigger.

yeah no question they still work well the hard part is finding a set that's 4 or 6 ply a lot of them were re-treaded onto commercial truck cases I've seen them on 12 and 14 ply cases you can run the things at 0 psi and they still stand up the sidewalls are so rigid there's no chance of bagging them out :D the other hard part is finding a set that still has any tread on them yours look pretty good only about 1/3 wear but once you get down to 1/2 worn they have seen their best days. Got to watch the perishing as you mentioned old tyres can be a bit unpredictable when they let go, dosent happen often but they do and can fly to bits once they are a bit long in the tooth :D

the first sentence is what would be my concern with excessive sidewall flex,
maybe a light truck tyre with a suitable mud pattern would be a good choice?
I'm getting some federal couragias this week 8 ply with 1320kg rating
will see how they feel on Wednesday
