As wide as you can go?

Postby COOCX » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:51 pm

Deciding to put a set of STT's on my Challenger, currently looking at either a set of 305/70/16 or 285/75/16.

My question is, is it better to go as wide as you can fit or am I better off pocketing the difference and save the cash?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

285/305 both quite wide tyres. I prefer a narrow tall tyre but each to there own, On a challenger Id probably go 265/75/16.
Softroader VW Amarok nowadays....

If you did some research you will find that off road, particularly in our NZ mud and sloppy ground, that a tall narrower tyre is better.

Apart from that unless you change rims to something with a big off set, you lose steering lock with wide tyres. However if you only drive in a straight line you will be fine.

A wider tyre gives more tread area, so all things being equal will give longer life. But it also takes more power with more friction (other things like pressure will have a greater effect, however)

or you could look at it the other way a skinnier tyre has less tread on the ground so it'll have less wear than a wider tyre :D

305 will cost you around about 200 more a corner compared to a 285, and just looking at maxxis they only do a 315. 285 will be fine but you may get rubbing on full lock and also the speedo will be out
needs more curry
