Jig, pop,stick.

Postby corosafari » Fri Oct 22, 2010 9:16 pm

Been a while since any posts on here so time for a bump.

It would be fair to say Im bit of a fishing nut, got a bad case of TAS (tackle aquisition syndrome). Just spent most of my turbo money on a serious jigging rig so the safari gunna have asthma for a little longer.
As much as I enjoy fishing for a feed first I like moving on to the sporting side. Including fly fishing salt and fresh, casting poppers to surface kingies, mechanical jigging and looking at getting into a bit of stick bait flicking. Probably get a bit of stick over that one ha ha.
Maybe there are similar insane types on here , to swap ideas, advise and maybe organise the odd trip. Im based in Coromandel, not a bad spot for fish'n.
Yep I know of other sites that specialise in this, I choose to spend my spare time on here. :)

Spent $700 on a rod and reel the other week for soft plastic fishing. That seems to be the way forward now!
Heading over to Castle Point this weekend to test it out hopefully.
Early snapper are out too.
You're a bit too far to organise a trip with but I'm sure others are a little closer.
Virtual fishing comp this weekend land based if your interested,

Hi Gaz
Been soft baiting for a few years now of boat and kayak, still got fairly basic rigs as kayak can be a bit hard on gear. Mind you Im sure the misses wants a flash rig for xmas, ha ha.
Sounds like a good rig for 700, getting into top end gear there.
If I,m just doing a local fish which is reltively shallow and sheltered I mainly get livie, drift with this on a balloon, while soft baiting or slow jigging for the table. And if a Coromandel freight train hits the livie, Im a happy chappy.
More open waters down your way, you never know, may do a bit of a fishing safari at some stage.
Good luck with new rig, I stuck looking at my new rigs in corner of cabin for 2 !/2 weeks until I can let loose, I am working on captain to stop over a reef on way south, you never know. Have made jury rig jig from stainless rail from old switchboard rail, you never know.
Will wait for on the water comps coming up, but ta for that.
cheers

I've been giving the Lucanus slow jigs a go off Wanga's and when the baits are going a bit slow, a drop of the slow jig works wonders and usually gets hammered before touching the bottom, two weeks ago i lost a 200gr Lucanus just after dropping it back into the drink, it was on a 100lb trace and my reel is spooled with 50lb Braid, i dont know what it was that hammered the lure but guessing a large Barracuda or small shark as it just got attacked then busted off before i could even strike.

They are easy to fish as you just lower the Jig to the bottom then slowly wind up a few meters or past were fish are showing on the sounder then just repeat the process untill hooked, and dont strike hard just keep slowly winding.

Good fun and im just using my standard 15-24kg bottom fishing rig.

Im keen to get a Speed Jigging set-up and target the Kingies and Puka out past Wanganui towards the Naki. :D

Those Lucanus jigs are lethal, strong little hooks. You wouldnt want top loose too many 200grm ones at the price. When I want a rest from jigging , I drift off the reef and put slow jig in rod holder, the movement boat is normally enough to work these lures, they also effective dragging out the back along as near bottom whereas soft baiting generally requires casting ahead of drift.
Consider a mechanical jigging rig before you commit to speed jig. The main difference is speed jigging reel ratio up around 6:1 where as MJ 4:1 . MJ probably more versatile for targeting puka and not as tiring. Look for stick that can handle up to 400grm jigs for your waters. You never know what comes along down your way, about 3 to 4 years ago I was in comp out of New Plymouth, gamefishing, all we caught was about 10 mahi mahi.
Freekish warm current.
Water temp was up around 16 c out from Tauranga this morning.
Happy jigging.

Dolphin fish.? are you serious mate, I've only ever seen one caught in a comp at Whangarei and it was the first one caught and people were just amazed by it eh.

And yea i ment to say a mechanical jig set-up as they can be very good allround rigs, the new Diawa metal geared jigging reels look sweet but im def a Shimano man when it comes to reels, I was thinking of a Torium but they are 6.2:1 so the old Charter special ive already got might be a good choice.?

Actually gutted as she's flat as a pancake out here today so dreaming of fishing at the mo

And yea the slow jigs are sweet around lunch time when you just let them drift along with the boat movement while having a feed, nice easy fishing :D

Yep seriously were dolphin fish, actually was onboard a boat a few years back where two were landed about 15 miles out the back of the barrier, we were trolling and spotted a dead whale floating with fish all around it.Got the two mahi mahi and several small yellowfin trolling past the whale.
Bit of a daiwa fan myself, first jig rig was daiwa saltist 30 on monster mesh rod. But recently got more serious rig and went shimano, ocea jigger 4000p reel on shimano top end jig rod.
Hope nice fine day comes soon so you can give the charter special a run for its money, not sure what max drag for those are, should imagine only about 5kg.
One week to go for my leave so counting down. Good news is that my good lady has recently accepted position as secretary of local fishing clud. I have kindly offered to be voluntary research and development officer, so will have to go fishing heaps for newsletter material. :D
