"Better Than Stock" 4340 Chromoly Birfield
This is an OEM style, 27-spline birfield made entirely out of 4340 chromoly material. The material upgrade makes this birfield much stronger than stock.
This is not a comparable product to Longfield cv's, and shouldnt be thought of as a cheaper version of a Longfield cv, its a upgrade from a stock cv. This will fit your stock axles and is a direct replacement for a stock cv.

$220 each

Note: All Trail-Gear products carry a one year warranty against defects. This warranty covers defects in material and workmanship. An example of a covered defect would be a missed machining step that prevents installation or a significant internal material void. This warranty does not cover normal failure or breakage that is typical when using stock joints in extreme conditions. 4340 Chromoly Birfield joints will not hold up to extreme usage with oversized tires.

Is there a price available on TG's dirty 30's Jafa?. They may ideal for those who want a good product, but don't want to part with longfield type coin.

99% sure they'll fit your LJ71 diffs, the axle lengths you chaps have is different to a hilux but as I understand it's only the offset of the diff thats an anomoly....as these are std toyota 27spline CV"s they will slot right on to your cruiser axles
hmmmmm $220 per side

They are a Trail-Gear product, so imported from the US

We've received a few inquiries as to how strong these are, I have got the following from Trail-Gear and Longfield. These are tested on a purpose built rig that measures how much torque is applied. The axle/birfield is tested at a 30 deg angle, ie like if your steering wheel was turned,Bobby Longfield tests his at 40deg

Longfields - 8900-9000 ft/lbs
Dirty 30's - 8500 ft/lbs
"Better than stock" 27 spline cv - 5600 ft/lbs (inner axle failed, cv still ok)
stock cv - 3500-4000 ft/lbs

Theres a chart on the Longfield site here
http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/graph.html
and a link to a video of Trail-Gear testing a dirty 30 (266mb)

I have found that although prado Cvs and hilux Cvs look the same, Prado ones are marginally bigger and dont fit into the hilux housing without doing a bit of die grinding internally. Whether 2.4 Prados have differant to 3.0td prados has been discussed here before but Prado Cvs Ive tried havnt fitted the Hilux.

Hi Bill

The CVs in the front of your truck shouldn't be the same as Hilux. Yours should have the strenghtening ring around them.

Up until around 1990 all cruisers and hiluxs had the same Cvs but when the hi pinion diff came out in the 5 cyl cruisers they strengthened the CVs and the Prado's had the same one. At the same time the pinion and side bearings were also beefed up in the 8 inch diffs and the diff axle oil seals were also made bigger.

The VX cruisers are bigger again

Cheers Richard

Here's a little more to add from what Richard has said hope it helps

Hilux and prado's CV's all have the same 27 spline fitment to axle and CV's are the same length, where they differ is in the bell part of the CV prado ones are slightly meatier and have a raised ring around the bell part. (right where the hilux ones always fail)
The axle housing (swivel ball area) on a prado is bigger than hilux to allow for the bigger CV, hilux axle's are different in length to Prado as the diff head has a slightly different offset.

Sooooooo

-Hilux CV's will fit onto prado axles, and fit into prado housing

-Prado CV's will fit hilux axles but won't fit into hilux housing (without die grinding)

-Std Prado CV's are stronger than Std hilux

-The CV's listed here will fit Hilux or Prado

And more for this thread (although it is a dead issue as such :P ).
The earlier cruiser cv's that everyone is saying are the same as hilux ones, are often in fact slightly different. The flats on the face of the bell is often larger on earlier cruisers, making them (imo) weaker again. (as there is less thickness in the cv wall at this point )

So how much stronger might the TG ones Jafa is selling be than the beefier Prado cv's.??
