NZ 4wd Track Database

Postby mike » Wed Mar 25, 2009 8:55 pm

Hi All,

After this weekend ORE will have a comprehensive user track database for NZ (with your input of course).

What do we want to enter for each track ie

Length: 4.8kms
Surface Type: mud,clay etc
Area location ie forest, beach etc
Track condition: muddy but with firm base.
Notes
Number of trucks.
Photos, track start so you know what it looks like, 1,2 more photos for visuals?

Remember you guys have to fill this in so dont come up with to many.

Every track will be able to be marked on a map for its location, start and end points and then displayed on a large map showing where all the tracks are in nz.

This will be live after this weekend and only available to supporters as a thanks for supporting the site.

Post away.

cheers

Ok a lot of progress made on this.

I need a couple of testers please. Who would like to enter in their favourite track and test this?

You will need:

3 photos of the track,
know where the track is on a map (map supplied on ore)
willing to enter their own location (users now enter their own gps location) I hear people asking why. The track database shows you how far each track listed is from your home location!!!! A great feature for this is, if you are going somewhere on holiday, set your location to that, then see how many 4wd tracks are close to you!!!

I will open this up to the testers tomorrow and if all goes well then the rest of the supporters tomorrow night :D

Cheers

Ok its up

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Tracks

supporters can add and edit ANY track (this is a joint effort on track information for the whole of nz)

you can view this link here. http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/map/node this shows all the tracks in a certain area.

If you edit your account and add your location, then when you visit the track link, the list will show you how far away the tracks are from you!!! Nobody else can see your address but you, so its safe to enter this.

Remember the more tracks you add the more people will find it useful and thus add their tracks which you then find useful. its a two way street. It will be closed off to the public eyes and only internal to ore members in the next day or two.

cheers

Hey Mike, nice work

Any way you can change "number of trucks" so you can enter words and numbers. I wanted to enter "2-10 but 3-6 is ideal" but I can't as it only allows numbers to entered.

Or you change it to a tick box 1-3, 4-6, 5-10, 11+

It was more along the lines of min number of trucks. but yeah i can change it i guess so you can enter a range.

Can we put these links in Mike. Offical DOC Westcoast 4wd tracks that has come out of CMS review. Of which ORE (the original Club) had input into via myself.

An interesting project Mike and congratulations on assembling it. The west coast links supplied by Al are not yet completely confirmed as there is still the NZCA approval to be achieved. It is unlikely that they will change the plans but it has happened.
The NZCA meet on 8 April.

This is looking good Mike, although I am struggling to see both start and end points for the tracks.
Is there an intention to add the full path?
A track site I find really good (albeit for mountain biking ) is http://tracks.org.nz/
This organises the tracks by area and gives a path for each.

ahh ok i see how they do it. they have two sort of map things going on there. one that locates them (all the different markers) and one solo map with the drawn track on. I can actually do this now but want it a little more automated. so am working on it :D

Hey ya,

Was just doing a google for some tracks and destination ideas, and this old thread appeared.

Is the link to the "tracks" still there. It just comes up as a blank page.

Cheers

all disabled. I'm shrinking the site back to get to the heart of the performance issues. Trying to get it back to basics. You just gave me an idea

www.remotemoto.com (it's down right now, but I'm sure it'll be up again tomorrow) is great also. Bike orientated, but most tracks are accessible to 4x4 too, and North Island tracks are on the way soon

Yeah he's put a lot of work into it which shows.
Hopefully anyone with a bike (or an interest in fly fishing) gets behind all the other features, otherwise the maps alone are handy to almost anyone.

This one is slowly taking shape too and has some North Island tracks http://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/

Excellent work on your site too. Was pleasantly surprised to get an email alert after so long without them haha.
Shame the track DB on here never took off.

We've started a 4wd nationwide database of tracks at http://www.4wdtracks.co.nz/

This is a sister site to http://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/ mentioned by Taz above so I will be converting tracks over from the motorcycle site with vehicle specific details converted to be 4wd specific and hopefully members will contribute tracks going forward.

I've got a stock '06 Grand Escudo/Vitara at the moment and am hoping to pick up an older 1600 4 door Vitara soonish to get out in.

Nice one Eddie! Enjoy the Suzuki. They are way ####### easier to stash a weekends worth of pies and beers in than the bike!
