day trips in canterbury area

Postby Sausage » Sun Jan 03, 2010 8:14 am

Hello all

Just wanting to find out if there are any worthwhile trips around the canterbury area, nothing to crazy as like to keep the truck a wee bit shiney :D but just an adventure somewhere (other than the waimak) would be me and a couple mates all surfs mine 95' one 87' and one 84'. due to work commitments a day trips are best but maybe the odd weekend get away would be nice.

Thanks

Waipara gorge is nice and easy at the moment. went up there the other hot day for a swim and picnic, awesome. Ashley track and river are good as well. You could head to Waiau and then on to Conway river, head down and pop out at highway, another good trip. You should go to the library and get Ken Sibleys 4wd track books for future reference.

Did the ashley track on new years eve....parts of it are very overgrown & you will get scratched paint...so avoid this if your wanting to be "shiny " at the end of it .

Yeah  the two I mentioned previously. They are out of print but are held in the local Chch council libraries.

I am currently looking into Topside road/Rainbow. Its in Hanmer, Could be a good day trip if you leave pretty early, I'm planning a couple of days to visit the huts in the area and hopefully find some venison :o

Keep an eye on trademe, I had all those books new years ago - loaned to a mate that took his '70 swimming at the 'Mak & gave me a bag of weetbix back
Thankfully Ive replaced them all via tradme sales, saving 'silby' as a favourite search is the easiest way - some of the tracks are a bit old & outdated but still loads of good reading in them

Cheers
