Whanga Road

Postby DieselBoy » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:13 am

I have never been into the Whanga Road before.

Seeing as we will be around that area and probably the Nat park, it would be rude not to go for a look.

Can anyone give me an update on access and track conditions??

Cheers

Whanga Rd Pub is a good friendly stop, there is a good campsite within easy staggering distance (500m), the road is closed during a certain time of the year

Theres 8 youtube vids which might give you some idea of the terrain (1st is here), altho we didnt go all the way thru due to a big loose overhang

Hi folks

Taupo club looking at doing a trip through in November - can anyone tell me what sort of trucks/tyres required and whether we can get all the way through. Also is there any access required beforehand/ringing required to go back up through the station?

Cheers all.

No pic's for a good reason 8)

It's an amazing piece of country, and it's still a good family day out in the shiny with mud tyres and a mate or two with similar shiny trucks. Shiny, but still need tow hooks, spades, ropes etc etc.

Would be a shame if it ever turned into a 35"tyres and a winch only type track like the rest of the nth island tracks have.

If your looking for a challenge and somewhere to do skids, you would find it a bit lame.

If you like a nice scienic drive and appreciate your surroundings, then you will LOVE it :D

Just what I needed thanks, we're trying to organise a few more shinier/touring type trips these days and that sounds like exactly what we're after - unfortunately sounds like the station loop is closed due to lambing time which is unfortunate, but certainly on the cards for the future.
We have plenty of tough truck stuff around the central north island, but certainly for the shinier members I'm trying to organise more trips, hopefully with a weekend campover as well.

Cheers

Matt

Went through in Feb '12, 2 vehicles with winches, took us about 6hrs, there were some deep mud holes where one required a ground anchor to negotitate.
Great day was had since it was our first time on the track then stayed at Aotuhia Station shearers quarters for the night then out through the farm tracks next day.
Highly recommend this track if in the area.
