Avoca River/ Basins hut

Postby mylux » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:37 pm

Hi,
Am planning to shoot up to the Basins hut on 28, 29, 30 september or thereabouts (subject to gate key of course)
Am planning on heading up friday afternoon (3 or 4ish) and returning on sunday.
Friday will be head in and set camp,
Saturday would head a little further up river (hunting or 4wd :?: )
Sunday = Home
The track is reasonably straight forward but a snorkle would be advisable as you have to cross the Avoca twice.
There is a hut but we normally take tents.
If anyone is interested on tagging along let me know.
Edit. There is a Gate fee for each vehicle.

Ha Ha!
Tis basically north of the top of Lake Coleridge. It is the 2nd of three huts on the true right of the Avoca.
The 1st now known as "The Retreat", formerly Harper Base in Forest Service days, is at the confluence of the Harper & Avoca rivers.

The 3rd one is Avoca Hut belonging to Canty Uni Tramping Club. At Christmas time I managed to drive up to the start of the 15 min foot-track into the 3rd one, Avoca hut. The last bit was fairly hairy with boulders larger than my Prado.
DSC_0526.s.jpg

Likely the side stream Galilee Creek on the true left coming down from Jordan Saddle with have washed out in the heavy rains we had up there a month ago. Was pretty tricky crossing that on my own at Christmas.
I rode the foot track down from that hut on my mountain bike which was also rather hairy!

Basins, or Back Basins hut as it used to be known, was done up by my bro in law when I was staying there just after Christmas. Looking pretty good now.
There is a much older hut across Basins Creek which is not used much now.

Tis a very nice piece of country up in there. Our last trip in there we drove up to within 5mins walk of the 3rd hut.
As opposed to the Avoca, you can also head up the Wilburforce where there are quiate a few huts on the attributries. There is a massive basin about 10kms up from Glenthorpe home stead, you could spend months in there and still not see it all...
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

On parr for the trip, had a hold up tho.the gearbox I got from pick apart went in to an auto trans place today to get input seal replaced and shaft swapped over, then got the call saying the box was f#%ked and there was metal thru it n clutch pads were toast.phoned a1 Holden wreckers a month ago n they wanted like 570 for a box then went back in today n they said $250 cash, wish they had said that when I was first looking...owells.got shock bushes sorted, may end up putting steel straps round the rear springs to keep them in place for this trip  as I'm not gonna get the truck back till the weekend and may run outta time to make something else.
